No video on ASRock E3C224D4I-14S (does not POST)

I just received this motherboard for my NAS build. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157486

Installed G3420 Celeron CPU and 8 GB memory (2x4GB). When powered the CPU fan comes on and also the PS/2 keyboard LEDs blink once. No video. It waits for a few seconds and the LED on the motherboard just goes off and then starts blinking.

I tried Corsair and Patriot memory in various configurations but results were the same. Different PSU did not help either. I made sure that the memory is pushed in properly. CPU and memory modules were tested on another machine and everything worked just fine.

Is there anything I should try before RMA'ing the board?

Thanks!

that board specs say Haswell

Single socket H3 (LGA 1150) supports Intel® Xeon processor E3-1200 v3 series & Haswell i3 processors
Supports Hyper-Threading Technology
Think you may need to swap out the CPU(yours is a pentium), for a Xeon (I'm not certain) not worked with many servers......Try one stick of memory at a time, bare minimal. Also try over night CMOS clear for chits n gigglez. Are you using the CPU for video? Did you configure it in the bios? If so can you try a external GPU? Try a speaker see if it spits out code for no boot?

I think the CPU is in Supported List:
http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=E3C224D4I-14S#CPU

Code:
1150	Pentium	G3420(C0)	Haswell	3.2GHz	3MB	53W	All

Well, I did not configure anything in BIOS. Even though there was no video I tried alt+control+del, but that did not reset the board. I tried single stick RAM again both makes still the same.

I googled it no one said it was a Haswell, The list states Haswell i3? Pretty sure a dual core is not an i3, your not getting to the bios right? Again I stand corrected! Saw the list you linked, can the Bios need updating? can it do a blind flash......Grasping here. Does it have a E prom bios? Could swap it out, if you had another board flash it then put it back........

I was trying to help you

My Supermicro board (in sig) did something like that at first. I had to clear the CMOS a couple of times to get it to boot. Since then it's been fine.

See if you can access the IMPI controller over your LAN and check it for error codes. (Should be working even if the computer is off, as long as it's plugged in.)

Also, what kind of RAM did you put in that thing? It requires ECC. (You mentioned swapping it out - most people don't have ECC just lying around, soooo...)

Yes, read the reviews.. Board's really picky about ram..

You are right I was using non-ecc ram. I also tried registered ecc. Nothing worked. Only thing remaining is ecc-udimm! I have emailed ASRock support to find out if ecc-udimms are a must for this board. Manual says it supports ECC-UDIMM but that does not mean that it won't work with non-ecc ram, right?

I am going to clear the CMOS to see if that helps.
Edit: That didn't help.
IPMI did not request for an IP address from my DHCP server. Not sure if a good memory is required for IPMI to work.

I ended up going to the Crucial memory finder, and then hunting down a deal on the part numbers they said were compatible. I ended up buying 4 DIMMs from three different places, but they were all identical.

Installed RAM shouldn't be required for IPMI to work, but mine turned itself off after trying to boot with incorrect ram. Pull power from the board, then plug it back in and see if the status light for the IPMI comes on. (Hopefully there is one?)

I mena, okay, hey, it could be a bad board, but getting these going is sometimes tricky, and they're picky as all get-out about hardware. You should probably check the qualified hardware list on asrock's site too.

I am going to wait for ASRock's reply and if it is not due to non-ecc ram I will return it. I had another one shortlisted for my NAS.

(That link doesn't work always!!?)
This is the motherboard in the link: Newegg Item N82E16813182823

I should have stayed with a better server brand. Only advantage of ASRock was the smallish size and 14SATA ports on SAS8087 connector. That would have looked kind of neat, if it worked!

Did your motherboard fail to boot with non-ecc ram as well?

I didn't try non-ECC ram. The documentation was very specific in that it was required, so I only tried ECC - my assumption is that it would fail.

But it was even picky about which ECC ram I used.

I would expect the SuperMicro you linked to be equally picky.

What are the part numbers on the RAM you tried?

I tried only non-ecc.

When I checked Crucial upgrade recommendation it came up with non-ecc as well:

That's odd.

The AsRock QVL only has ECC on it:

http://www.asrockrack.com/general/productdetail.asp?Model=E3C224D4I-14S#Memory

But yeah, it doesn't explicitly say it's required.

See what AsRock support says, I guess.

Too bad about the IPMI not connecting - if it did, it would probably be helpful and informative. But that makes me suspicious, too.

According to ASRock support team, Intel C226 works with both non-ECC and ECC memory, but C224 should always use ECC.

I have ordered Crucial 2x8GB, let's see how it goes!
