The existing driver dates back to 98. 98 tried to find a driver but it cant be identified. I figured getting a Win98 SE upgrade cd might be the best solution.

Xubuntu is probably not a good choice, try something lighter like Vector, Puppy, or Arch. I can't see you needing to do something that can't be done in Linux with a 98' laptop.
