No upgrade from ME to 2000 Pro?

I have Win2K Pro Upgrade and I want to install over ME, why won't it let me do it? Is there any way around this problem?

Thanks

Windows ME and Win2K Pro are based on two totally different Windows' cores. Hence, it is not possible to "upgrade" Windows Millenium Edition to Windows 2000.

Furthermore, since you have the Win2K Pro Upgrade edition, you can't just install it over Windows ME. The upgrade edition would be used if you were trying to go from Windows NT to Windows 2000.

I'm not sure about why you can't upgrade ME, but I know that ME is the same core as 95, 98, 98se, etc. and you can upgrade from those. So, at least for his reason why, I would say TonyT is incorrect. (I'm not trying to pick a fight, this is just what I know to be true) Anyway, you don't have to have WinNT to do an upgrade. You can upgrade from Win9x. As to why it's not letting you, I'm not sure. Anybody know if ME came out after Win2k?

W2K came out before ME and this is the reason you can't upgrade. The core for ME is the same core as the rest of the Win9x OS'es.

On the other hand, upgrading an OS is not really the best idea anyway. If you are going to install an OS, start fresh.

Well,
I was able to "Upgrade" my old 98 Install and install 2000 to my second Partition...thats what I want to do now, Dual boot to the D: drive with 2000....but it won't install under ME...what am I to do??

Try booting to dos prompt, start smartdrv.exe (required), and install from dos prompt: winnt.exe (in i386 directory, which has been copied to hard disk). This should work to install on a partition of choice, where WinME has NOT been previously installed.

Edit: This will install the boot loader, which allows choosing which OS that boots. The "default OS" can be adjusted under Win2000 by using: "windows key & break key"/Advanced/Sartup & Recovery.

Yeah, I was going to try that...will that also enable the Boot Loader so I can choose between the two OS's?

Thanks

Install win98 then install win2000, then upgrade to win me(if u must) then you have a dual boot win2k/win me.

Thanks for correcting me, and I apologize for the incorrect information. You learn something new everyday.

I can get the Win2k setup to start, but it says "unable to load boot loader, setup cannot continue" i ran smartdrv.exe from C:/Windows. Any ideas?

Upgrading Windows of any sort leads to problems. You should do full installs. You can use your upgrade disks to do so it will just ask for a prev version of windows to be placed in the cdrom to show that you are qualified to use the upgrade disk.

sorry, i didn't explain it right. I have WinMe installed and would like to install Win2k also, not upgrade. I can't run the setup from with WinMe because it recognize the version of Windows. I can't run it from the DOS prompt either. And i can run Winnt.ext because it won't load the boot loader.

Where can I find winnt.ext, soulm4tter? I really want to have win2k with winme without formatting my hdd because I'm using winme right now.

If you wish to dual boot you'll need some free space besides the Win ME partition. (If the Win ME partition takes your whole hard drive you can reduce the size of the Win ME partition by reformatting and re-installing Win ME, using only a portion of the drive, or by using a partition utility like Vcom's Partition Commander or PowerQuest's Partition Magic to "shrink" the currently installed partition. I suggest an absolute bare minimum of 2 gigs for W2K installs, more if you want to install applications on it.

To install W2K, just set the BIOS to place your CD first in the boot order, stick the W2K Upgrade CD in the CD drive, and reboot. W2K setup will offer to let you delete / create / format partition(s). It also lets you choose which file format to use. If you feel that you must be able to "see" the W2K partition from Win ME, then you'll need to format the W2K partition as FAT32. (I wouldn't recommend FAT16.) Or you could format the W2K partition(s) NTFS and get a cheap utility from Systems Internals that lets you read from and write to NTFS partition from within Win9X. (I think, but am not positive, that the utility functions in Win ME.)

The W2K install process will automatically set up the dual boot menu for you and place the critical files (boot.ini, NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM) in the root of the C: (Win ME) drive.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Jim
