No TV-Out with Windows Media Player?

The video plays fine on the monitor, but on the TV it's just a blank media player screen. Why is that? Also, I found out that if I use PowerDVD, mpeg files will show up on the TV fine, but avi files only show up on the monitor. Any suggestions?

edit: found out the answer. had to turn hardware acceleration off...
