No tuners: Most plasma screens do not have tuners and if they do they are expensive upgrades. Some cheaper plasma tv's have optional tuners however they usually are not the best. This is not a disadvantage in most cases. Almost everyone who can afford a plasma will be using satellite, digital cable or external HD boxes. So the built in tuner would be redundant and a waste of money.

Ok sorry for not being extremely well gifted to understand english, but does that mean the plasma tv's dont have channel change?( lIke go to channel 2-3-4 etc to 160 etc ).The only way then to change channels on a plasma tv is to get a sat or cable box and change the tuner with it?

No, it means they don't automatically recieve digital TV. They do have regular tuners built in though, to watch regular Over the Air broadcasts.

i had something else typed up, but seriously, go to a local specialty store and talk to someone about this instead of asking ATOT, who will tell you that the gases in a plasma need to be refilled in 3 years after the burn-in sets in...good luck.

Exactly, but some high end plasmas even have OTA HDTV tuners.

hey, if you're gonna spend the $ to get an HDTV capable plasma, I would DEFINITELY get HDTV cable or at least an HDTV Over-The-Air tuner.

Your original assumption was correct.

"No Tuner" means, no tuner. There is no way to go from "channel 2" to "channel 3." These are also often refered to as "tv monitors" which is just another way of saying "a tv without a tuner."

However, it might also specify "no OTA HD Tuner" or something like that - which would suggest that it might have a NORMAL tuner, but not a high definition one.

Historically, most plasmas do NOT have tuners built in. If you are buying a plasma it is assumed that your interest is primarily it to watch either DVDs or High Definition TV content. Right now there are 3 ways (Satellite, antenna, and cable) to get High Def content, so it would be silly for each manufacturer to include and charge you for a tuner for each.

Generally speaking, you'll be using SOME kind of external tuner with a plasma tv, or you'll be getting a crummy picture anyway.

Note that included tuners ARE becoming more common as plasmas become more mainstream - you'll find them on some of the cheaper plasmas because they know that people who don't know what they are doing will take them home and then get pissed off when they can't figure out how to watch TV. As your quote mentions, this isn't necessarily a good thing - the higher end plasmas won't have tuners, because they know you are going to have satellite, or digital cable, or some high definition source you want to watch.

Plasma without a tuner = plasma monitor

Plasma with tuner = plasma televison

Who cares about a built in HDTV tuner? You probably have a HDTV tuner fromyour cable/ sat company anyway.

Some guys just want to use it to watch dvd or other sources.

Yup.

Incidentally, most plasma TVs (consumer models, I mean) have NTSC tuners, so they'll be able to tune channels no problem. Most still don't have ATSC tuners (for HD signal), but like Koing said, most cable companies will provide that tuner for you when you sign up for an HD package. My Panny HD plasma is like that--NTSC tuner, but no ATSC tuner. If you want to receive OTA (over-the-air) HD signals, you can get an ATSC tuner for around $300 (which isn't cheap, but if you're buying a plasma, $300 more for a set-top tuner isn't really that much of a cost issue).
