No task manager in Win XP

I am using Win XP Pro and has no problems but this one.
Everytime I ctrl+alt+del and click the task manager the
window closes and I am back at desktop. Kinda frustrating
thanks for any tips.

When you hit control-alt-delete do you see a little green square down in your systray (by the clock)? If so, try double clicking on it.

what do you mean "click the task manager", that is what loads at default. keep other windows closed, so you dont even need to click on the window to see what is going on. also, maybe you have to be logged in as administrator (not sure, never tried)?

If you hit ctrl+alt+delete the windows security menu opens and from there you can
enter the task manager to close non-responding programs. I am unable to do
this without encountering the problem in my initial post.

In WinXP I hit CTRL/ALT/DEL and a menu pops up. Click on the Task Manager button and it should pop up on screen. Doesn't open directly to the Task Manager as it did in older versions of Windows.

If I were in your shoes I guess I'd try some alternative methods of invoking Task Manager -- just in case your problem is only a corrupted / missing control, but I'll bet the alternatives don't work, too. For instance, try right-clicking on the Taskbar and choosing Task Manager from the context menu to see if that opens it for you.

It might be worth switching to the Welcome Screen style of logon just to see if Ctrl-Alt-Del will directly bring up the Task Manager. In fact, switching to the Welcome Screen and then switching back might just turn out to be one of those "magic toggles" that happen occasionally in this GUI (and in others).

Do a complete Virus Scan - when I had trouble accessing the Task Manager, it transpired it was the KlezH Virus

Thanks guys I will give those ideas a shot and let ya
know what happens. I did try to access task manager
through the bar and no luck, seems I am totally locked
out of it.

/me crosses fingers that it won't be that damned Klez thingie

(On the other hand, that might be easier to remedy than some mysterious loss of functionality of portions of the OS.)

Keep in mind, if it is already infected, he only good way to scan for Klez is to take the drive(s) out and scan them in another, protected, machine. Otherwise the AV software probably wont find it.

Well I did a virus scan and it came back with no infected
files, so I guess my only course of action would be a reinstall
since I would not know how to repair it. But I will just deal
with it since it is not a major problem at this point.

U read my post right? so U scanned the harddrive in another machine, U didn't try scanning your machine in your load of windows right?
