OK, I did something foolish and I don't know why exactly and am looking for some help. I installed the K-lite Codec Pack Full Version the other day, and my perfectly stable WinXP machine is now messed up.:( After installing K-Lite, first thing I noticed was that my WinAVI Converter no longer worked due to a codec issue. Then I noticed that I had no sound from my computer. So I ran a System Restore to the point created just prior to the install. Didn't work quite as well as I had hoped. I had to reinstall Divx, WinAVI and the Xvid codec, made a few other changes and have most of the system working now. However, I have no System sounds. What I mean is the beeps, and boinks and dings that normally drive people crazy. lol I can play the wav files through media player with no problem, but if I open the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties Window, the test play icon is blanked out so you can't play the sounds. I also noticed that under the Audio Tab, MIDI Music Playback is blank even though I've selected the Microsoft GS Wavetable 100 times. It just won't stick. I have the same exact problem with the Voice Playback option too. I don't know if fixing those would fix the System Sound problem, but just something I noticed that didn't use to be like that. So does anyone know how I can get my System Sounds working again? That codec pack install was a very bad decision, and I just want my simple and stable pc back.

Ugh, can't say that was the response I was hoping for. :( But thanks for the info, atleast it prepares me for the worst. I assume you put some effort into fixing it before the format?

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought for sure I was going to have to do a full format, but after some thinking and searching I came to the conclusion that I needed to get all the codecs back to default. A quick search found http://www.free-codecs.com/guides/How_t..._default_codecs_in_Windows_XP_2000.htm]. And after 45 minutes of painfully adding each and everything back in, I heard a loud DONK that scared the crap out of me. LOL All windows sounds are working as well as flash videos on youtube and other sites. Man, I'm sooooo stoked!!!! If anyone ever comes across this issue, I sure hope this post helps.;)
