No sounds in Windows 2000!

I installed Win2000, and right away I had two crashes and one BSOD. However, my main issue is that the there are no sound in windows 2000. My sound driver is C-media 8738 audio and even though there is a little speaker icon in my system tray, it does not produce any sounds. The audio driver worked fine in ME/98/95, but it does not work in 2000? Is this because the driver is not certified or unsupported by 2000?

I would really like some sounds in my new OS🙁

You're using the same driver for W2K as you use for Win9x??? While that will work on occasion I'd say that's your problem. What soundcard do you have???

I let the program find the the driver itself and I think the driver is the 2000 one. My sound card is some c-media card🙁

Un-install any sound-related drivers/items (if any) under Device Manager. Download the drivers here, then reboot, and re-install the drivers.

A PC I built for a cousin two months ago had a motherboard (Iwill KA266) which had CM-8378-based integrated-sound. This driver worked just fine on his Win2K-only system. Hope this helps.

After uninstalling your devices, use these drviers as they are the latest available and fix issues (performance, games) that the link posted above do not address. WDM 6.22 Driver Link- 8738W2K , download the latest W2K applications from here if you want to use them- Apps

Doh! My bad. 😱

Wish these drivers were around when I built that Win2K PC.... but my cousin hasn't had a complaint yet---fortunately. 🙂

LordUnum,
Have him update his drivers to the 6.22, CPU usage dropped by about 5~7% on average since the 5.36 release and they fixed some 4 channel issues also. The 6.21s (some people say are more stable) are still available but I have found the 6.22s to work great for me so far on both the Iwill DVD266-R and Iwill KK266-R, tried them briefly on an Asus A7M266 also.
