I dropped a Chaintech AV-710 into my wife's Abit BM6 based computer last week and it defies every effort to coax a peep out of it. Is it possible that it needs a newer PCI standard to operate than the old BX chipset provides?
 
Yep, thas me. I have the latest BIOS for the board. The PCI standard is 2.2 for the BX, and if Chaintech has published a required standard for their soundcard I have yet to find it (all it says is PCI... big help). I will look into IRQ usage.
 
No IRQ conflicts. I guess the only thing left to try is plugging it into another computer.
