no sound

earlier today i downloaded guitar pro(software that can play guitar tabs as midi's) and when i ran the first tab thru it, i got no sound out of it. i thought the midi was on mute so i checked the control panel only to find out it wasn't muted. from then on after, i havent been getting any kind of sound at all. i know its not my speakers, and device manager says everything is working without any problems. i uninstalled guitar pro and even redownloaded nvidias unified drivers and installed them(since my sound is run off the motherboard) without any luck. im pretty sure some kind of app is controlling the sound but i cant figure out which. does anyone know if theres some way to fix this?
