Just reformatted my sister's computer with WinXP Sp1, . She has an Asus A7V266 (original), KT266 motherboard (NOT "KT266a"). It has a C-Media CMI8738 for onboard sound.

For some reason the audio is not detected on boot. I've double-checked BIOS and all audio settings are set to "Auto."

I first installed the Via 4-in1 drivers from the motherboard's included driver CD (4.29a), then the latest version from the Via 4-in-1 website. Then installed the audio drivers from the CD.

Any clues? Is there something in particular with this motherboard that I'm not doing?

On the mobo, there are the pins for the case audio header (the front ones). Anyway, on some motherboards you have to have 2 jumpers on the pins, otherwise the mobo gets confused thinking there should be a front header hooked up. I've had problems before with this, but can't remember the mobo model...

You could try disabling the audio in the bios, boot windows. reboot again, enable audio in bios, then boot windows. maybe that will help jump-start windows into detecting it.
