Here's the situation: I just got back from a 1000 mile journey across the United States with my computer in tow. I got back and was able to plug everything into my computer including my soundcard and speakers. It all worked! Awesome. I was able to watch a few movies and listen to my music. I was going to sleep and instead of turning off my music by closing foobar i just pressed the mute botton on my keyboard to stop all sound. When i woke up in the morning and pressed mute again (to un-mute) i got the un-mute screen but no sound. I fiddled with the sound and the speakers volume control. Nothing.

Well, not entirely nothing....a small, light hum through the right speaker. Not much though.

I came to the conclusion quickly that the sound card probably came unplugged or maybe it doesn't even work. The problem is that i can't even get my motherboard on-board sound to work. I don't really even remember how to get it to work.

The specs:
Sound-card: Hercules Game Theater XP 6.1
Computer: HP 762n with WinXP sp2

I'm not sure if I just have it muted somehow hardcore or if the sound on the whole thing hsa just gone bad. If anyone can walk me through some steps to troubleshoot I would gladly appreciate it. I'm thinking the soundcard is toast and just really want to hook it up to the motherboard. If anybody could help I would greatly appreciate it.

checked all of that, it's all un-muted
also checked and confirmed that the speakers do in fact work (to rule that out)
also checked the Hercules Game Theater UI app to make sure that it's all unmuted.

As far as i can tell, everything is unmuted.

So if that means the sound-card doesn't work how do i enable my mobo sound?

Try going to ur audio properties in Control Panel and click the Audio tab. You should see "Sound Playback-Default Device" with a drop down menu. If you have an after market add-in card, you should see two audio devices. Change it back to the onbrd sound. Hope that helps. If not, Im not sure.

unfortunately it only gives me the option for the Hercules sound card....it's like the onboard sound isn't even there.

What a nightmare.

o_O......hmmm
Have you checked in the BIOS? I don't think either of my machines have any sound settings in BIOS but you never know. What about in Device Manager under Sound, Video and Game Controllers? Try completely removing the sound card physically and all the drivers, too, and then do a New Hardware search. See if it finds ur onbrd sound.

Start / Control Panel / System / HArdware /Device Manager / Sound, Video and Game Controllers

Do you see a yellow "!" next to anything?

If you do, you need to reinstall the driver(s).

Ya good thoght there, scott. If his Audio Properties still sees the add-in sound card, then his Device Manager should, too.

One more thing. I appologize for not mentioning it before, have you tried to re-seat the sound card? An add-in card that is only 99.999999% seated will cause a world of trouble.

Was the sound card out of the computer while in tow or was it installed? So many times I've seen cards and hardware come loose from taking a ride.
