Okay I am starting a new job and my first order of business is to activate the onboard sound on these Dell computers in the office. Previous people had reccommended they be ordered without sound (woot save $10). The PC's are Dell Dimensions LxxR.

It looks as if the hardware for the onboard sound card is there. My guess is that the BIOS is a version which completely disables the onboard sound and there is no option to turn it on.

Are there any good sites that contain Dell BIOS files? Or does dell go to the trouble of actually using a seperate motherboard when someone orders the machine without sound?

Umm....goto DELL.com and click on the Support option located at the top of the webpage.

You should be able to find any files necessary, including white-papers containing specifications.

Also, just a FYI, just because there are some headphone jacks on the back (probably red, blue, green), doesn't mean there is sound available on the motherboard.

Hope this helps.

If you post the model of the desktop, and the current BIOS, we might be able to help better.....

Thanks for the help. I find a BIOS update, but as souka I will look on the motherboard and see if there is indeed sound capability. I just assumed that dell would not bother with a completly different mobo for those that ordered without sound. Otherwise I guess I will find a cheap sound card in the for sale forums!
