I just built a machine with this mobo for a friend. I installed the nforce unified driver checked all the system volume settings, had him install a pci sound card, and he still has no sound at all. Can you guys give me any suggestsions? When he installed the pci soundcard, I had him disable ac97 audio in the bio/integreated peripherals section. He swears he hears humming from the speakers and taht they worked on his old computer. So I'm not sure what to do now.

Thanks

If the drivers were properly installed in each case, then the chances that both audio devices are borked is remote. That means it is likely a physical connection or speaker problem. Make certain he has them properly plugged in, powered on, no loose or damaged wiring or connections, and that they show up properly in the device mangler.

Yeah I have checked for driver install failures and he swears the speakers are hooked up correctly and turned on, plugged in, etc. He gets no CD sound or system sound.

I can't think of anything else that would cause this. Do you think I should try changing the irq on the sound card to see if that makes any difference?

Thanks!

its xp sp2. I'm just scratching my head trying to think of anything else. I secretly suspect his speakers, but he said he tried a 2nd set and still nothing. Its bizarre

Try reinstalling the drivers with the latest downloadable version. I wouldn't uninstall others first or anything, just install them. Make certain the audio device is the one selected for prefered playback too.

yeah done that too. I was just hoping it was something stupid that has slipped my mind, but no luck. I'm also going to see if he can start in safe mode. Really I need the computer in front of me so I can mess with it.

Thanks!

That is a strange problem... I wonder if he's plugged the speakers into the wrong port (both sets he tried) on the soundcard. Does he know to put them in the green jack?

And I feel for ya, I hate troubleshooting by phone. I NEED the system to be in front of me to work my magic.

Um,

Sorry to be obvious. The last time this happened to someone I know his real player was on mute.
