No sound on laptop

Hey guys. I'm in need of your help again. I have a laptop with Windows XP that for some reason does not play sound. Sometimes when I restart the computer I will have sound and other times I won't (like today). Any way here is what I've done so far:

I checked to see if it was muted by going into the control panel and going into Sounds and Volume. Under the Volume tab it showed Realtek AC'97 but everything else in the tab was grayed out including the volume slider.

Under the Audio tab it showed Realtek AC'97 in both the default device fields for Playback and Recording. I clicked on the Volume tab under the Playback drop-down list and all it showed was Wave, SW Synth, and CD Player (all were turned up to the max). I closed out the volume control and went into the Advanced tab and made sure the speakers were set to laptop speakers.

The tabs under the Default Recording device were grayed out too.

I went into the Device Manager and it showed Realtek AC97 had said there were no problems. I also tried playing a sound file in Media Player and it plays without any error message but you can't hear the sound.

Any ideas on how to fix this?
