This is an older Cel 1.4 4403US compaq with a TR100 motherboard.

I had to replace a power supply in it about 6 months ago and since the onboard sound did not work (customer didn't care). I got a cannot start #10 error.

They now have a SB 24 Live card they want to use (compusa could not get it to work, it's new from them and they tried another card).

I disabled the onboard sound, tried the card is all three slots with the modem and nic out...but no sound comes from it. The card installs fine and there are no errors.

Pluging the 1/8" jack in and out of the card makes the speaker 'static' so I think power is getting to it...

Windows XP was reinstalled with a format as well. Latest drivers from Compaq and Creative as well.

Anyone have any ideas. They don't want to dump money into this, so I told them to get a new motherboard for $50 and I'd drop it in for the same $25 I charged them for the sound card install.

New one for me, if there is someway to make it work as is.

It's strange that the sound stopped working after you installed the new power supply. How did you disable the onboard sound? On some Compaq machines, there is a jumper on the mainboard that needs to be adjusted. Also check the BIOS and see if it has a place to disable the sound. Disabling the device in Device Manager is not sufficient in most cases. If all else fails, you may just have to put in the new mainboard as you stated. Just make sure that the $50 mainboard is decent quality and won't give the person even more problems. ;)

Power supply had to be replaced due to it failing.

The device was disabled in the BIOS, there is no jumper on the mainboard for this. CMOS was also reset.
