No sound in XP?

I was given a computer.. celeron 850MHz/Asus CUSL2-M. I installed XP on it and it had sound. Then i got the windows updates and downloaded all the patches. Now no sound. Any ideas?

Also, I o/c the celeron to 1.062ghz. fsb/pci is 125/41 if that helps.

What sound card are you using? I guess just check to make sure that you have a driver for your sound card and there are no problems with it in your Control Panel. Hope this helps.

it's onboard sound (AC97). where do i find the latest driver for it?

also, i think it's because of my o/c since when i lower the speed to 960mhz (fsb/pci=113/37) i get the sound back.

anyone know of a way i can get higher o/c and keep sound?

You should be able to get the sound driver from the motherboard manufacturer's website. Maybe add more cooling? Or got up little by little until the sound won't work anymore, and then go back down one step, leave it at that speed, and try other options? If all else fails, you might also want to try updating the BIOS. Good luck

yes, but the latest bios (v1012) is beta right now.

960mhz is the highest i can o/c w/sound still working.

oh well, everything i do works fine at 960mhz (for the time being)
