No sound in WinXP! Please help a desparate gamer!

Hi there, I just installed WinXP OS and installed the sound driver properly and everything, however, when I play sound I can't hear anything! I thought maybe the sound driver that came with my mobo is outdated so I went online and updated it. Same result! I made sure the speakers are turned on and everything. I just can't hear a damn sound! Please someone suggest what is wrong? A gamer like me without sounds is like a fish without water! It's killin' me!

The sound I have is an onboard device called CMI8738/C3DX PCI audio device. It worked fine with my old Win98 and a previous installation of WinXP, but this time? no cigar🙁

Thank you so much for helping if you can!

Well, the obvious first... make sure everything's plugged in right. I can attest, on the best possible authority, that plugging, say, a second speaker into the first speaker's headphone jack can prevent any output 🙂. After that, take a look at your logs in Computer Management - does anything show up there?
