A couple of months ago my sound stopped working on my computer - unfortunately I don't remember what driver or piece of software I installed that caused it to stop. Now that
I am trying to figure it out - I can't. It must be a piece of software because when the WinXP login screen comes up and I select the user dan - the windows login sound plays. As soon as all of the software loads on startup my computer no longer plays any sounds. I have the most current set of drivers installed and do not have any conflicts in the device manager. It seems strange to me that everything works initially to play the default windows login sound Does anyone have any suggestions on how to trouble shot this problem?

Thanks,

Dan

Volume controls are fine - nothing is muted and all the volumes are high. Its really strange that it plays the windows startup wav file - then after that nothing. Windows media player doesn't have any sound, no default windows sounds, nothing.

I am using the Realtek ALC 850 chipset that is built on to my Asus 8NE-SLI motherboard. I am also using the most current set of drivers that are windows certified.

Check your Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices settings to make sure the right devices are selected.

I found a temporary fix that gives me sound. I went to control panel - system - device manager and uninstalled my audio drivers. Once the driver was uninstalled I clicked the scan for new hardware button in device manager. It then said I had a new multimedia controller and installed the realtek audio drivers. Once I do this the sound works. However, once I reboot the computer I have to repeat this process of uninstalling the driver and then scanning for new hardware. Any new suggestions anyone?? This one has me baffled?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Mabye you should uninstall the drivers, and then reboot the system. It shoudl detect the new hardware.
Can you also disable the soundcard via the bios if it is built into the mobo.
disable it, then restart windows all nice and dandy, then restart again but reactive the soundcard, and see if that does the trick.
