no sound in linux, device busy?

I have a box that I'm learning to use linux on. I have an ISA SoundBlaster 16 - very old, very well established. i have mandrake 7.1. I cannot get any sound. The "mixer" says that I need to

chmod a+rw /dev/mixer

which I did, to no avail. When I use the hardware configuration tool that mandrake supplies, and try to test the soundblaster 16(a) that it finds, I get the following error:

lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksmp/misc/sb.o: init module: Device or resource busy
lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksmp/misc/sb.o: insmod lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksmp/misc/sb.o failed
lib/modules/2.2.15-4mdksmp/misc/sb.o: insmod sb failed

Any ideas what this means? I see the "smp" error in there - I am running dual p2-500s, and everything else works ...

have you set it up using sndconfig? otherwise you'll need to tell it all about the card ie:irq dma etc

Instead of using sndconfig, I'm using HardDrake, which is the hardware management tool for Linux Mandrake. It says that the device or resource is busy. I went to the bios and disabled "pnp bios" which I researched to find might be the culprit to no avail.

All I can think of is that I might actually have a resource conflict, despite the bios settings telling me different.
