A couple of days back I got a motherboard based on Intel 810 GMCH0set & ICH (82810 + 82801) chipset which supports all Socket 370 and Slot1 processors. It has integrated (onboard) audio and vga port.
On it I run Intel Celeron 667 with 64MB RAM.

I installed Win98 SE but there is no sound from the system. I installed the necessary audio drivers for Win 98 SE (WDM) from the motherboard drivers CD. Even then there is no sound. I installed the display drivers and the display is working just fine.

According to the motherboard manual the audio chipset is from Analog Devices, Model : AD1881. But on the chip on the motherboard its written AD1881A.

In System Properties under Device Manager there are two hardware devices under Other Devices : PCI Card and Unknown Device. Both have a circled exclamation points on their icons. On clicking the properties it says that the drivers for this device are not installed(Code 28). When I try to reinstall the driver, it cannot find the driver even in the motherboard drivers CD. What are these two devices?

I don't understand what the problem is. I have enabled the AC97 Audio and AC97 Modem in the BIOS under Integrated Peripherals.

Please help. Thanks in advance.

you say you installed the drivers...did you try pointing the unknown device and/or pci card to the drivers themselves or did you just doubleclick on the drivers on the cd? What I'm getting at is sometimes this so-called installing only puts the drivers on your system. You then have to specifically point the device in question to the driver files after they are on your hard drive.

Specifically, what motherboard is it?

remove the devices with the exclamations first
reboot, and when it finds them, than install the drivers
also, are you sure those devices are the sound ones?
i mean, stupid question.... but maybe there something else?
something i've done b4.... speakers into wrong output port....
or speaker volume off...

for the pci card :
first i doubleclicked on the drivers in the cd. then i tried pointing the devices to the driver in the cd as well as in the hard disk. i let windows search for the best driver but it was unable to locate the driver anywhere. so i selected the driver myself. friom the list of all devices i selected 'sound, video and game controllers' ,then clicked on have disk, changed the path to the cdrom. the file there was 'Smwdm.inf'. when doubleclicked, the model which came was 'SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio' when i clicked OK, it warned me that the driver was not written for the device. i clicked yes and installed the driver.

But in the system properties, it says that the device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. The driver which i installed above was for win98 se.

So i removed the device, rebooted and installed the driver in the same way as above from Win9x directory in cd. this time the file is Smw95.inf and the driver is Smw95.drv.the driver is installed and the device is working perfectly (no exclamation marks on device icons).
But still i cant hear any sound. i checked the multimedia properties. under devices in audio devices there is 'Audio for SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio'. in its properties it says driver is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem.

The mother board is a Priya BIW2B motherboard.

That website is useless for information. Anyway, I think where you might be going wrong is pointing the PCI Card to the sound drivers. Seems odd that an integrated sound chip would show up as a PCI card. I'd point the "Unknown" device to the sound drivers (for 98se) and see how that goes.

First, remove both devices from device manager. then either refresh or reboot. This time cancel out of the PCI Card driver thing for now and concentrate on the "Unknown" device.

Are you sure there's no additional PCI card on the board that you're not aware of?

Ok I tried that. When I point the Unknown device to the sound drivers for win98se the device icon shows an exclamation mark saying that the device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed.

But if i point the unknown device to the sound drivers for win9X then the driver is installed. Again it didn't find the driver. So I had to specify the location of the driver in the cd. It gave the same warning that the driver was not written for the device. I clicked yes. The driver got installed and in the device properties it says that the device is working properly. But even now there is no sound. In multimedia properties under devices in audio devices, the properties of Audio for SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio says that the driver is enabled but inactive due to an unknown problem.

No, I don't have any PCI cards installed. I'm sure about it. I use an external modem, the video is taken care by the integrated Intel graphics controller.
