No Sound from speakers

I have Vista 64 Ultimate installed on the system in my sig. It was previously hooked up in one room with some logitech 2.1 speakers that just connected via the headphone (green) jack on the mobo. No problems whatsoever.

I relocated the computer to another room and started using headphones instead. Same jack, and that was the only hardware change. Everything worked fine.

After a while, I was tired of wearing the headphones all the time, so I hooked up a set of logitech USB 2.0 (both in regards to USB type and the speaker setup) speakers since my buddy was borrowing my 2.1 setup. These also worked just fine.

I got my 2.1 setup back and hooked them up to my desktop. No sound. In the Sound Control Panel it says that my SPDIF is working great, but no headphones are connected to the headphone jack.

I checked BIOS, nothing in there to switch between digital and analog onboard sound. I checked the mobo manual in case I bumped some jumper when re-arranging things in my case.

Nothing. I have reset the CMOS, and all kinds of things. Headphones don't work in the jack anymore either. 'Great', I thought, 'The headphone jack is borked on my mobo...'

Now, here is the kicker. The speakers work beautifully in Windows 7 32bit Beta. Seriously.

It is just that all my games are installed in Vista, and I have all my stuff set up in Vista (honestly I do most all of my media stuff on my MacBook, but sometimes I like having the larger screen or listen to music while gaming) so I would like to get the speakers working in Vista again.

Anyone have any ideas?

By the by, I am not averse to fully reinstalling since I may need to do that soon anyway. Vista just told me that one of my drives is failing, and it happens to be the OS drive.

I would just like to see if I can get this sorted without that so I can at least know how to fix it in the future.

Check the sound settings. Make sure the default audio output is set for the sound card/onboard audio and not the USB device you had on previously. It may be set to use the USB set as the default audio output.

I'll have to see if I can find that. It is going to be in the Sound Control Panel correct? I only ask because I move between like 4 OSes each day and so they start running together in my head.

Yes in the sound control panel. Like XP there should be a section where you can choose the audio device from a dropdown menu. I'm at work right now so i don't have vista in front of me to give you a detailed walkthrew.

Ok, well that didn't work

What did work was reinstalling the drivers.
