No sound from rear speakers?

Well I have searched this problem for quite a while and everywhere on the net there seems to be no real answer to correct this. Here goes: I recently bought A Logitech Z5500 speaker setup with a BLuegears B-Enspire sound card primarily for gaming and DVD's. After connecting everything up (I am using a Digital Optical cable in the 'S/PDIF OUT' slot in the sound card) and double checking that all speakers are wired correctly I boot up and find that I have no sound from my rear speakers. The odd thing is however that in the Microsoft sound console when running the 'test' for a 5.1 setup the rear speakers chime when I click them- which implies that they do indeed work and are wired correctly but they do not 'work' per say, when music, videos or gaming content is being played. On the Z5500 console under 'input' I only have 2 options (shouldn't there be more? like Pro logic 2 which my sound card supports) and that is Dolby Digital Live and Dolby Digital DTS and playing around with those settings doesn't seem to make any difference.

Any input I am grateful for as this is really annoying....I paid for 5.1 damnit.

Vista Premium 64bit
Bluegears B- Enspire
Logitech Z5500 speakers
1x Digital optical cable.

2 channel input means, you guessed it, 2 channels. look for a setting like dolby pro logic II in your player. maybe there's a filter you could add, like ffdshow or something.

most music and videos are not encoded in 5.1.

As for your games, make sure you have 5.1 selected in game and the bluegear's card needs to be set to encode to Dolby digital(dolby digital live) or DTS interactive.

Thanks for the replies guys, I found 'advanced options' in VLC media player under filters which allowed me to set 'force detect of dolby surround' and I now seem to have sound from my rear speakers for music :) will test some games later but things are looking up,

You do realize that music isn't a surround sound source though....so really your just kinda...cheating the system.

Music is stereo and therefore should not have any sound coming out the surround speakers. It's really that simple.
