Bought ONKYO HT-s3500b trying to run HDMI from PC to Receiver

Have PC GPU HDMI to HDMI 1 on receiver, HDMI out to TV

At first only 2.1 was working. I played with some PC settings and got what seemed like 5.1 to work after I updated the AMD driver.

I cant get sound, I did then shut of receiver and went to work, came back home, turned on system and now NO sound at all. Ive rebooted the PC didnt work.

Im stuck as to what to do now. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

OK -

1) There can be handshake/compatibility issues with some receivers on the PC (Onkyo has had a history of this) - Google your model and see if this is the case and if so others have figured out a work around.
2) What Catalyst driver did you recently download , and did you do a "clean install".
3) What audio drivers are installed on the PC - windows drivers, realtek drivers , AMD drivers- check those settings in the PC again - because they can mess with each other and reset back to default settings, etc. - IF you are using the HDMI out of the GPU - then you can shut down/disable the Realtek and the Windows audio drivers if you have them installed - but this will disable the headphone jack in the PC.

After you post we can provide additional help.

Also make sure that Windows is set to use your AMD card as the default output device. Otherwise it will most likely be transmitting through your onboard sound.

ok so im back where I started, I get sound but its only coming from some speakers. the center, front R and rear R plus sub.

I have the 5.1 set like in the pictures and ill click the speakers in the configuration and all activate sound the sound just only comes from the 3 speakers I mentioned.

The HDMI port on the AVR isnt outputting sound, that was the no audio issue. (Brand new still outputs video I think it may be a setting but im pissed as it just arrived yesterday)

I updated the AMD drivers yesterday in my original troubleshooting, uninstalled every other audio driver.

This maybe too easy - but do you get sounds from other sources to the left speakers? Just play the radio on the Onkyo and set it to 5.1/Dolby- do all the speakers work then? When you say the HDMI port on the Onkyo is not outputting sound please explain the set up in more detail. Are you sending sound both to the TV and to external speakers from the Onkyo? How ?? Speaker wire from the Onkyo or speaker wire from the TV? IN other words are you splitting/processing the sound from the PC at the Onkyo or forwarding it/ passing it to the TV and then out to the speakers? I do not use my TV speakers at all. I do not think think is your issue due to the right channel vs left channel problem you are having- just making sure of your set up.

Also do you have a different HDMI cord available- I have heard of them going bad. Also right click on the HT-R391 in the first pic ( playback devices) , go to "properties", and then "advanced" and check those settings. Post what it is set at and what options you have to set it to. To best use I have mine at 24 bit /48000 hz (Studio quality) . I think if it is set to low at the 16bit - the 5.1 wont work.

The port not working was an issue with the AVR, Onkyo support helped me reset it.

The sound only goes to external speakers connected to AVR I also dont use the TV speakers anymore.

I will check other sources when I get home to see if any play to the left speakers, didnt think about that.

I do have other HDMI cables so I will check them but my understanding is because it is digital it either works or doesnt but I will still check to be sure.

I have mine set to the highest as well whatever 24/48000 or something close.

OK, will await following a different source to see if speakers work then. YOU don't just have FM radio on the Onkyo to see if the left channel speakers get sound from the radio? Even getting static without FM reception will tell you if they are hooked up or not.

hmmm. I figured that would be too easy ...LOL

Ok - When you are in Playback devices/right click the device/ speaker config / left click and what is this set to - It should be set to to 5.1 ( surround) - if not - then your speaker config failed to hold - make sure you click on APPLY or set as default ( not sure which ) after setting it . Re-set it to 5.1 if not already there. Then click on each speaker icon and it should make a sound just from the speaker you click on. Try each speaker icon to see if any sounds comes from it when you click on it. If not then something is definitely wrong.

Another thought- do you have left channel from just PC speakers? Trying to determine if the PC is sending proper signal to Onkyo or not - is the MOBO sending full audio to GPU? IF you plug in PC speakers you do get both left and right channel, correct? Since your original post said you did get 2.1 initially. Was that from speakers hooked into the Onkyo or from PC speakers using USB or the Audio out plug in the back or top of the PC? If you plug in a headphone into headphone/audio jack you do get left and right out of the headphones? Just making sure....

Next go to PROPERTIES , back one step from speaker config and into properties you will see a tab called levels. Click on that and it should show individual speaker levels 1 - 6 each having its own slide. What do you have? This area is messed up in my set up as well and I had to tweak this significantly to get even close to a balance between left and right. My left front and left back and the center were 2-3 times louder than either right speaker. So, if I had the AVS receiver on pretty low volume I might not have thought any sounds was coming out from my right 2 speakers at all. SO , check that out for a possible solution.

I may be tied - up tomorrow. I will try to get back online to help figure this out. But is sounds like the Onkyo is the issue. Does the Onkyo have a Optical digital input? If it does and your PC may also have an optical digital out - so you could try that. IF you get all channels working via optical digital cable - you know it is the HDMI signal that is either not being sent from PC properly or not being processed properly by the Onkyo. Did you try a different HDMI "in" on the back of the Onkyo from the PC ? Wouldn't that be great- a new unit with a faulty HDMI in port in it.

My front left speaker isnt working.Everything else sounds off, switched to a different input (DirecTV) and get sound from every channel except that. So between you and the folks at toms hardware we got it figured out. Thank you!

Sorry to hear you have a bad speaker- at least you figured it out and it isn't the new Onkyo. Glad to help.
