No sound from Motherboard S/PDIF out through receiver

I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-21THX and I'm trying to get my computer sound through the receiver. I'm sure the receiver OPT-2 input works as I've tried it via my comcast box. I've also installed the X-Fi on board drivers for the motherboard and made sure Windows 7 can see the SPDIF output source. It also plays test sounds under the SPDIF advanced settings. However, games, windows sounds, etc cannot be heard.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

I have an Audigy and not an X-Fi, so this is just guessing:

If you have a movie with Dolby Digital or DTS Sound, and you play that, do you hear sound?

If so, you may need this:

I have my Audigy2 Gamer connected to my receiver, and I get 5.1 sound in Windows / games / etc with that DTS Connect pack. Otherwise I think you'd only get it in movies/ other stuff already encoded in DD / DTS.

People having similar problems with videocard HDMI have posted that they found the HDMI was not set as the -default- for audio out.

That may be your problem: the port is working but sound is normally still sent to the analog out.

How good is the 5.1 from that? I don't game on my HTPC, but I do get some local TV stations that only broadcast in Dolby Digital 2.0. I'm wondering how the DD Connect Pack would compare to using Dolby Pro Logic.

Wouldn't it just pass the bitstream? I know that is how it works for me when I am watching ATSC. And I am just using the onboard sound (with an digital out module).

Your sample rate might be too high for the receiver.

Right Click the sound icon in the tray and check the properties supported formats tab. My receiver wont decode DD and DTS signal sampled above 44Khz and wont even see signals above 96KHz.

I'm not sure if you understand what I'm saying (or maybe I don't understand what you're saying). A couple local channels broadcast in 2.0. Therefore, the only way to get "surround" is by using something like Pro Logic or possibly the DD Connect Pack. I typically play whatever the source feeds, but dialogue is a bit more muddled when my center speaker doesn't come into play, which is why I was asking if the Connect Pack would do a better job than Pro Logic at expanding 2.0 to 5.1.

Mea Culpa.

If they broadcast in 2.0, there isn't much you can do. DPL ][ from your receiver is the best you can get. I doubt a sound card can be better than a receiver unless you go pro card.
