No sound after building new system

Went ahead and just recently put together a system from scratch.

Using an asus p4g8x deluxe motherboard. Problem is, when I load up windows, I have no sound yet.
Mind you, its still using the same hard drive from my old computer, complete with windows ME and all, so I'm thinking either a) windows ME doesn't know what to do with the onboard sound on the card, or b) there's something i need to activate in the bios to make it work?? Any thoughts???

Most boards come with the onboard sound enabled in the BIOS by default, so Windows should detect the new sound devices automatically. You can check the BIOS to be sure though, it's usually listed under "integrated peripherals" or something of that nature, check your manual. However Windows, especially the 9x kernel, is oftentime flaky about things like that. Try rebooting a few times, if that doesn't work, run the add/remove hardware wizard and see if it picks up the devices.

Windows9x and WinME are really bad about changing motherboards and stuff without a complete reinstall.

You may have a problem if you have onboard sound on that mobo... it's usually enabled by default like said above.. so either A you have no sound drivers installed, or B you have sound drivers installed for a sound card which is installed in the comptuer, as well as the other sound.. possibly causing a conflict? only things I can think of.
any ! or ? in device manager? if everything looks okay in there, go into sound video and game controllers and see what device is listed. (maybe just sound in winME)

your previous sound driver and the new one are conflicting...

1. either disable the onboard sound in the BIOS or take out the old sound card ( assuming you have installed the drivers for the sound card )
2. or there's a registry error ( since you are using different mobo and most likely a different chipset is used ) the best thing is to back up your data and do a
fresh installation of Windows
3. or you could just reinstall windows ( without formatting your HDD ) and let windows redetect all your hardware and after that run RegClean to clean up
