No software will overclock my new HD4870

Just got my new HIS HD 4870 512MB today...badass card so far...atleast a step up, no a flight of stairs, from my old 9600GT...

Using current 9.2 drivers.

Anyways, I can't seem to get the damn thing to overclock...ATi Tool won't work (something about a missing driver), AMD GPU Tool won't allow me to change settings, and CCC Overdrive won't allow me to make any changes either.

I'm out of choices here guys! I know that heat is not an option, as the HIS card I got has a rather non-OEM cooler:

Can't seem to post pics? Oh well, that link has the card in it...cools quite admirably with my temps never going over 75C running Crysis at 1680x1050 all Very High settings with 4xAA (13.44fps avg according to benchmark w00t...)

With this in mind...given that I have a decent card...I know it'll overclock well with heat not being an issue seeing how the stock OEM coolers seem to be in the 100 range some times.

I've been reading that it could be a driver issue, like ATi disabled overclocking...but I don't feel like using older drivers...the newer the better I think...especially with the game improvements and such.

There may be some issues with the 9.2 Catalyst and I experienced problems with the driver alone. You should also try the 8.12/9.1 drivers before anything else

Did you plug in both 6pin PCIe power connectors? If you don't, I don't believe any software will allow you to overclock.

8.12 was pretty stable, at least for me. I didn't get problems with 9.1 also but I've read abt people complaining.

Why are you even expecting it to overclock anyway. Overclocking is always YMMV. Some will OC better than others.

Im expecting it to overclock because at 790mhz (the highest Ive been able to get any working software to go, only ATi Overdrive so far) works flawlessly with low temps at that. I know it might not overclock that well, but I have nothing to test this.

Do you have any HELPFUL comments or did you just want to put something in the thread to increase your posts number?

OK NO MORE COMMENTS.

For some off the wall reason Rivatuner is working now...I have no idea why, I guess it changed its mind.

Anyways...845mhz on core stable and 1150mhz on RAM stable tested via looping Crysis at 1680x1050 with the DX9 to DX10 edited config files (gives DX10 features under DX9) and got 38fps...really impressive I think and 3DMark Vantage. Still can't get ATiTool to work, but I guess that doesn't matter, has a nice artifact scanner, that's bout it.

I'd recommend that you don't overclock that card. the 4870 runs hot enough as it is, plus any stable/safe OC you might get won't yield any significant performance over when you're already seeing. the stock card is already plenty formidable, and if you're in need of more processing power you'd be better off with a faster card. 2-3 more frames per second is not worth the drastically reduced lifespan for the card...

It gave me a 10fps avg more in Crysis...stock was like 27.8fps avg. So in my testing the overclock has yielded dramatic performance increases. And realistically, the card doesn't run hot, its still cooler than most (if not all) 4870's on the reference design heatsink, which must be good enough or they wouldn't use them...it hasn't gone past 75C according to GPU-Z.

As far as the life span is concerned, it was only $160...a year from now a $160 card is going to be 2x faster, so I'll for a fact be upgrading within 12 months or less...so then that's not an issue, plus they all have warranties ;-)

I understand your concern for and well...and if I were sticking with this system for the long haul (4-5 years like some do) then no I wouldn't overclock, but its just that big of a worry to me.

Quite a few of the non-reference coolers do a poor job of cooling the VRMs, so you should keep an eye on the VDDC temperatures.

It's not unusual. Many Ati cards work well at that temp. Personally I prefer lower temps. Both my cards reach 55-57c under load.

Edit: What's your fan speed?

That's a little weird. Perhaps you should try a clean driver install after all. Even the CCC should be able to tell you that. It set mine at 50% by default, but they seem to noisy at that level and I reduced the speed to 40 and 45% respectively.

Good job with the OC, it certainly seems convenient to do it. I'll give it a try myself!

No software will be able to detect the fan speed, as your card's cooler has only a 2-pin connector, with no RPM support...
