No setup.exe file will run (Win 7)

OS: Windoes 7 64 bit
Problem: when I double click on any setup.exe file, I get a UAC prompt as normal (do you want to allow the following program to make changes to the computer). After clicking yes, nothing happens. Nothing changes in task manager.

.msi files work just fine.

Any ideas what could be wrong?

ANY setup.exe or just one particular program? If it is any program, which ones have you tried thus far?

Any setup.exe program. I have tried a lot, including software known to work on other systems. Nothing wrong with my software or downloads.

.msi files work, and to install Expression 4 setup.exe didn't work but the individual .msi files did.

OK I did a diagnostic boot from msconfig, only loading essential services, and the problem was gone.

Then restoring all services, the problem is still gone.

I find there's a "FF Install Filter Service" associated with a freefall sensor, which I had disabled. Maybe it's needed in combination with the driver to install software. That is really messed up.

Moral of the story: Dell chooses notebook components with REALLY crappy drivers.

Assuming you're not using a company laptop, it's usually not a bad idea to go ahead and do a clean install of the OS so you don't have to put up with any of the preinstalled crapware.

Yes I did that, but if the drivers are crapware we don't have a choice!

Not sure why you'd disable the "Freefall" sensor software. It protects the hard drive if the notebook computer gets dropped.
