Who cares. Why should they not have to go and pay $10 to see the movie like the rest of us?

A lot of times members are sent screeners for movies that aren't in theaters at all because they're low-budget/independent films. By not having any screeners at all, it means these films will no longer be able to be considered. So they're basically hurting creative, independent films which is what the critics are upset about, I think - not having to pay $10 to see the movie.

Mostly correct.

The indpendent/art/low budget films do not stay on screen long enough for the members to view them. Many of the smaller productions could not afford to rent a screening room for the members to view it and you could not schedule them to come view it anyway.

The upside for the major distributors is that there is fewer films to compete against, this increases their chances of winning awards. Since the large studios basically run the MPAA they will not reverse their decision.

The piracy explanation is generally BS and everyone knows it.

They are worried about piracy. However, despite whatever piracy occurs, they motion picture industry profited over 9 billion dollars last year. So, they want to wring out a few more hundred millions by stopping screeners. That's not greedy, is it?

Yes, the studios have been getting a tad paranoid about piracy. But that is not what the screener issue is really about. It is about limiting competition as I said above.

One a related note:

The movie industry is getting influenced by the music industry's doomsday predictions on piracy. This is of course intentional. The more groups on RIAA's side the stonger they are.

People have said before that a new technology will kill theatres. Examples include TV, VCR, DVD, etc. Has not happened and will not as it would be financial suicide for studios to pull out of movie theatres.

I think only movies from the MPAA studios aren't sending screeners. Some of the smaller/independent movies are picked up by them, but some smaller movies from other studios and people outside the MPAA can send their own screeners.

It's not like any of the complete and utter mindless drivel hollywood has purged from it's bowels this past year is worthy of anything but a laugh. At any rate, this article was funny because it just shows how mindless and greedy giant corporations like the MPAA can be.

The MPAA is not a business. It is an industry orginization and a fairly powerful one at that.
