Where did the idea of not selling alcohol on Sundays come from? Stores cannot sell anything over 12.5% in Louisiana. Some places wont sell alcohol on sunday at all.

Yup, a lot of states are that way. It is the remnants of prohibition and even to a certain extent blue laws. There are some towns whose retail is closed on Sunday (Paramus NJ). This is local government at work.

People who need a drink fix in MA go over the border to NH, which sells alcohol on Sunday.

Blue laws - most states have repealed them, but down South I've noticed most states still have them. Hey, if you're in that big a need of a drink plan ahead. :p

Religion has played a major part in the development of this country and you wonder where no sale of alcohol on sundays comes from? Put 2 and 2 together man.

I guess I just don't understand the 12.5% cutoff. I guess that most wines are under that alcohol percentage and you can still buy beer. I just fail to see why they let you buy some alcohol, but not hard alcohol

I assumed it had something to do with religion. I wasn't sure because I don't care for American History or Religion.

I'm not desperate for a drink like that. :) I was just curious because I work in a grocery store and see all sorts of people getting mad.

It's pretty sad how christianity has shaped and cultivated this country when many of our founding fathers wanted nothing to do with it(christianity)...

Here in GA it depends on the county. I think it's not available at stores but in some counties you can server alcohol on sundays in restaraunts as long as food is being served.

What exactly are "blue" laws? Are those the outdated ones that we keep around just because (ie Spanish American War tax on our phone bills)???

Blue laws:

The name "blue laws" was received when the Sunday closing laws in New Haven, Connecticut, were printed on blue paper in 1781. These laws are rooted in the Christian religious tradition and date back to the middle ages.

Compliments of Barron's Law Dictionary. Never leave home without it!

In PA, a bar can not sell alcohol on Sunday unless a certain percentage of its daily sales comes from food (not sure of the percentage). It is illegal to sell any kind of alcohol in a grocery or convenience store, and beer distributors must close at 10PM (only in rare cases are they open on Sunday). All of the liquor stores are state-owned, and with the exception of a few winery-specific stores, they are the only place where wine is sold. They close by 9PM on most days. PA has some of the strictest alcohol laws of any state.

Bah! You think PA has strict alcohol laws? Muahahahah, move to Utah.

No alcohol greater than 3.2% can be sold anywhere other than the state owned liquer store. People buy real beer (greater than 3.2%) at the liquer store by the BOTTLE because they tax it so heavy. Kegs are Illegal. Locally, the state liquor store closes at 7pm M-Sat and is not open on sunday. You cannot buy wine of any kind unless you buy it at the liquor store, to special order something they don't stock you must buy a CASE. In Utah, to get a drink at a bar you can either go to a bar or private club. Bar's can't sell any drink with higher than 3.2% alcohol and can't serve it without "food". Private clubs in utah are mandated to charge an annual membership fee of around $20, you can't enter without a membership and only there you can buy a mixed drink or beer at greater than 3.2% (for consumption on the premises). Drink's a measured and you are gauranteed to NOT get more than one shot of liquor per mixed drink (I believe it is illegal for clubs to mix drinks without the measuring devices). Up until 2 years ago it was illegal to advertise publically any alcoholic beverage, this means all bars and clubs still have odoul's signs in the windows. (Although the famous "BEE?, Welcome to Utah" billboard still exists outside the SLC international airport). Drinking in utah is heavily discriminated against, one of my co-workers friends was arrested for walking home (rather than driving) on New Years eve and taken to jail (public drunkenness I guess?).

You want wacky liquor laws come to utah, the liquor control commission has one member that drinks. (and isn't mormon).

All of the liquor stores are state-owned, and with the exception of a few winery-specific stores, they are the only place where wine is sold.

In PA:

State stores sell wine and all other alcoholice beverages. They are closed on Sundays.

Wineries also are allowed to sell wine. They are closed Sundays UNLESS they are considered an educational establishment. Therefore if a winery gives tours and presents some sort of "show", they may stay open on Sundays.

Beer distributors are privately owned businesses, but they may distribute beer only. (Malt beverages are now inculded in the definition of beer.) They are closed on Sundays.

There have been a few proposals to privatize the state owned stores, but no proposed legislation has ever passed.
