no response

I can't seem to get my new machine to start up. No beeps, nothing. It gets power but no responses and no visual.

Here's what I have:

ASUS p5n32-sli deluxe
Intel Pentium D 920
EVGA 7800GT
Corsair 512Mx2 DDR2
Aspire 600W Dark Side PSU


I've tried reseating the motherboard, reseating the video card, unplugging everything except for the 24-pin, 8-pin, and the 6-pin video connection and still no response.

any ideas?

No beeps huh... what about lights and fans? How can you tell it's getting power?

When you recieved your new hardware, did you dance around on a wool carpet wearing wool socks and holding your RAM sticks in the air?

I just tried it without the memory and the system has a long persistent beep, but when i put it back in, nothing.

anyways... I know it's getting power because the motherboard LED light is on, the CPU fan turns on, and so does the light in the power supply.

I think thats a hint.

Have you tried resetting the CMOS via the motherboard jumper - make sure you follow the directions in the motherboard manual EXACTLY ?

so far, i still get the same thing. I followed the book to the letter, and still nothing.

Also, to turn it off, i need to hold the power button down. I don't think that's normal either.

Make sure you connections from the case power button are connected in the correct orientation on the motherboard connection(s).

Can you test the power supply on another computer?

i have tried the ASUS tech support webpage, by trying it out of the case and using a pen/screwdriver to short the power switch connectors, with nothing but the power connected, video card mounted, RAM mounted, plus CPU and fan, and again, no response other than power (fans and MB LED on). Thought it could have been the case shorting the board, but still the same.

I'm thinking that something is DOA, motherboard or the ram. Even reseting the CMOS its still the same.

i've been reading about the Bios may need an update for this board with the 920 processor. Is there any way to update it to support it, because I have no idea what's on this board. I don't see where it may be labeled as to what version it has.

Asus often puts a sticker on top of the BIOS chip, and one of the numbers on the sticker is the BIOS revision, 1005 or whatever the case might be. The BIOS chip will be in a socket like the one in this pic, is there a sticker on yours with the BIOS revision?

yeah, thats what I thought it was. the chip on this board is as follows:

P5N33
0209
BC86
GSV13

if i think right, i believe it is 0209 on this board, meaning that I can't use the 920 on it without a flash to 0212. Would a cheap Celeron D work on this board and the 0209 bios it has just so I can get it flashed? I might have a buyer for a "used" Celeron D 326 so I can get this working 'if' I know that this is all I'd need to get the 920 to work on it like it should.

Darn. According to Asus's CPU-support finder, you need the 0212 BIOS for a Pentium D 920 🙁 and your sticker indicates the board shipped with the 0209.

One workaround is to plunk a supported CPU in there for the BIOS flash. Another is to buy a new BIOS chip that's already got the necessary BIOS installed, Badflash.com or something. Or get Asus to send you one, try calling them Monday perhaps.
