Suddenly my wife's E-Machine with OEM Vista Home Basic I.E. 7 indicates it found a website, but is waiting for a reply(that never comes). It also has a problem receiving all packets from a ping of my WRT54G Version 3 router. A second machine on the router works okay. I took the machine to Fry's and they had the same problem. They cut 3 CD Recovery disks, but indicated they had trouble recovering/reloading the software.
Does anyone know of MS Fixes that could cause this?
I have unchecked phishing and IPv6 in I.E.

Have you got a firewall installed?
What av do you use?
Could you post a hijackthis log?
Is MS update disabled?
What other sw have you got that might want to update itself?
 
E-Machines has a 90 day McAfee. I uninstalled it and re-installed it to virus check. Everything is clean. MS is set to download and not install. I will disable this, if I can find where. I have only Word 2000 installed as MS Works is junk.
This is my wife's machine and that is her comment.
I finally got a message that I.E. 7 could not connect to the yahoo server.
I unchecked Microsoft Update in the System Configuration with no luck after restart.
 
I just ping'd the yahoo site, 216.252.123.25 and received 4 packets each time. I don't do that well pinging the router. A problem is that I can't just install I.E. 7 in the OEM version.
 
I recalled that E-Machine support had me remove KB933566 update of I.E. 7.
Does anyone know of any problems with this?
My next attack will be to install, I hope, Firefox 2.0.0.5 and see if it works.
 
The solution. In analyzing the problems, I needed to be sure there was a network, PC to Router to Internet. This varied and finally got a stable connection. Tore everything out and reloaded the OEM Vista. When I reached the 5th tech to help me I would look to see if the Ethernet light was on to assure us that there was a connection.
NOW the kicker. The light was on whether or not there was a cable connected.
Yes, the problem turned out to be a bad motherboard. We had the E-Machine for 4 months when it barfed. The first one had about 2 years before the power supply blew.
We got some of our money back and bought a HP Pavillion A6120N. I pray it is solid as I don't enjoy my wife's complaining even when it is valid.
