No recognition of SATA drives at first startup

Ok. . .with the help of the vocal POST system, I finally got my new build to startup (BTW, that POST system is amazingly helpful). The only problem is this: when I go to install windows, it doesn't "see" my SATA HD. However, the drive is shown in the startup text. How do I get windows to recognize my SATA drive?

Also, are there any drivers or anything that I should be installing before windows? All I have done is put together the computer, and now I am putting in the Win2000 CD and installing -- anything else that I am missing?

Thanks!

Ed

More info: if I just startup the comp with nothing in the drives, it stops at "verifying DMI pool data." The startup doesn't go past that. Do I need to install some drivers or do something else that allows me to get to a DOS prompt?

Thanks to everyone out there for all of their help during this process!

Ed,

I think you will want to supply folks with some more information if you hope to get some help. I would suggest that you indicate the motherboard model and what serial ata controller it has (it will also be apparent by the motherboard model). In my case, my serial ata controller is an add-on to the motherboard and requires its own specific driver. Because of this, when I install Windows XP on the drive (actually drives, I have a RAID 0 array of WD Raptors), I have to press F6 (I think that's the key) when the windows CD asks if I need to install a third party SCSI driver. I then load the driver that came on my motherboard install disk which allows Windows to recognize the drive(s).
You'll want to make sure that in your bios you have your cd drive as your first boot drive and, if instructed, press a key to boot off of the CD drive during startup.
If your computer is shutting down before you hit that point, I would double check to make sure that your heatsink is making good contact with your processor. If you still have a problem, I would disconnect all computer components with the exception of the board, memory, processor and video card and make sure they're booting o.k. and start adding stuff back in, one at a time to see if there is a particular component that's hanging you up.
Also, all mainboards have beeps, lights, voices or something else to indicate what part of the process is hanging up the boot. I guess yours has the vocals (ASUS board?) That may give you some help.
Finally, you will not get a dos prompt until you have dos on your system, whether installed into memory minimally by floppy disc or some other way (something has to load dos, it doesn't just reside on a freshly formatted hard drive).
I hope this was of some help. If you still have problems, I would recommend providing additional info.

I am running a A7N8X Deluxe board from Asus. It is actually built into the board, but I am not sure if I need extra drivers or not. . .like I said, the drive (with its correct model and size) shows up during the startup screens. However, when I attempt to install windows, it does not recognize it.

Out of curiousity, what should happen if I start a completely blank computer (what I have now) -- what will the screen eventually say? (No operating system found?)

Thanks!

the sata is an add-on controller despite being built into the motherboard. you need to have the drivers on a floppy for installation, and press F6 for 3rd party scsi drivers. win2k does not have 3rd party add-on controller drivers for controllers that didnt exist when w2k was made. contact asus on how to install w2k with sata only. w2k doesnt detect the drive, because w2k has no access to the sata controller because it has no drivers for it.

sata drivers
read the manual

<edit>

wow, that manual is useless...

anyway, either download the drivers from the site, or use the ones on your cd. put ONLY the w2k drivers on a floppy, obviously all the others wont fit. dont put the drivers in a directory on a floppy though, just put it in the "root" of the floppy. it doesnt have to be a bootable floppy.
