No rear channel audio with optical connection

I just bought Logitech Z-5500 speakers and I am using them with a SB XtremeMusic X-Fi card with the digital i/o module and an optical audio cable. I have only the front speakers working though. I did have rear audio when using the stereo miniplug so know the back speakers are wired and setup correctly.

In Windows and Creative Audio Console, I have it set to 5.1 speakers in each but still only get front audio. Anyone have any ideas on what to do to fix this?

Is the SB card set to do Dolby Digital Live encoding?

If not (or if the card doesn't support DDL) then all you'll get is 2.0 stereo PCM over a digital connection. (You'll get 5.1 from pre-encoded Dolby tracks on DVDs though.)
