Is the power source the only reason a computer would not start in an operating power outlet? I have my old computer that I am about to take the hard drive out of but I was going to do one last check-up to make sure I didn't want any of the data. But lo and behold, my old computer won't even start up now. It wouldn't work in the surge protector (which the monitor DID work in), so I even tried plugging it straight into the outlet. It won't start at all. It's funny too because it started a week or two ago. Makes me really happy that I got a new one too, haha.

Anyway, as a follow-up to this question, does anyone know of a place where I could safely destroy my hard drive? I'm sending in the old computer and I don't want Dell to get any sensitive info that was on the drive and recycle it to anyone. So I'm going to remove it, but after that... I was told I should burn it, but honestly, I don't even know where to burn it. I don't think I should just toss the drive in my fireplace.

Thanks.

Just take out the hard drive, and ask a friend to format it for you then you can reuse it.
