I recently bought these parts:

Asus p4p800-e deluxe motherboard
P4 2.8ghz, 800mhz fsb processor
Corsair VS512MB400 512MB DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5 ram
Enermax something or other case

And I was plaining on using my current video card for the time being, since I don't play much games other than Quake2. My current video card is a Diamond Viper V770 (which is based on the tnt2 chipset).

So I put all this crap together, but it doesn't post (the power leds on the case turn on, but nothing shows up on the monitor). I've also tried it with my brothers geforce 2 gts, also with no luck. However, a really skanky PCI video card from circa 1996 I have laying around does get it to post.

If the video card is the problem, I won't mind shelling out for a new one, but I'd like to be sure that's the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

You could try booting with the PCI graphics card, go in to BIOS, and change the AGP from 8x to 4x. I believe it defaults to 8x, and both of those cards are 4x. Then take out the PCI card and try it with the AGP card. You could also test your Diamond Viper in your brothers computer to make sure it's still working.

What voltage is that video card? It most likely is not compatible with that motherboard

Did some more checking, it appears that your v770 is a 3.3V agp card. If so, those DO NOT go in newer motherboards, they can easily fry the agp slot.

stevty2889:

I'll give that a shot when I get home from work tonite.

edit: I forgot to mention, I did test my Diamond Viper V770 in my brothers computer, and it did work.

johnjkr1:

Where did you find that the Diamond Viper V770 is a 3.3V card? I downloaded the manual the other day to find out myself, but I couldn't find anything about what voltage it runs at. Also, in the manual for the motherboard, there is a diagram which depicts that 3.3V cards are keyed (or, rather, missing a key as compared to 1.5V cards). How about the GeForce 2 GTS, do you know what voltage that runs at?

I hope I didn't fry this thing... :-(

Thanks guys,
