😕I?m trying to connect an optical drive (DVD-ROM) to my HD (Maxtor Diamondmax 120GB 7200RPM 8MB)) on IDE0 but the darn thing won?t post. PC boots up fine when only the HD is hooked up as master on IDE0. I already tried setting jumpers such that HD is slave and DVD is master, but same result: turn power on but no beeps, nothing on screen, just the sound of fans spinning. Mobo is Chaintech SKT600 ATX.
Don?t want to put the DVD-ROM on IDE1 because I want that to drive the CW-RW device by itself, to maximize data X-fer when burning CD to CD.
I figure one of the following is happening:
1) I?m using round IDE ATA133 cables. I?ve read that sometimes the extra length of round cables can affect the data x-fer. Could this be an instance?
2) Bad IDE cable. Doubtful, because the HD works fine on either connector when it?s the only device on the cable.
3) Bad DVD-ROM. Doubtful, because again the device works ok when the HD is not connected to same cable.
4) Bad motherboard. Possibly, but then why would the HD work at all alone?
Things I have yet to try (will this weekend):
1) Use a regular IDE ATA133 ribbon cable instead.
2) Try a different HD.
3) Try using IDE1 instead of IDE0.
4) Try a different mobo.
5) ???
Anyone else know what might be going on here? Any thoughts appreciated!
Thanks.
