No post on restart, boots after power disconnected after a few minutes.

Hi there!

Putting together a cheap build for my roommate's aunt and uncle. It boots and runs fine after power has been taken off for a few minutes.

A CMOS battery pull is not necessary, I've tried mulitple power supplies and that didn't solve the problem. I've also tried a variety of memory sticks in various spots on the board, have disconnected everything other than the GPU, Memory, Power Switch connector, and CPU. I don't get any beeps after a restart, and when it runs normally it gives one beep. I've reseated the GPU as well, all to no avail.

My hypothesis at this point is that I should pick up a watch battery and see if that solves it. Anything else I should try or look into?

Thanks in advance!

Is this a new build.. or are you pulling together components from older systems?

If older, then check the motherboard for bulging or leaking capacitors....

When you try to restart .. what happens? Do the fans spin? or is it completely dead?

Thanks for the reply!

It's from used parts, meant to be cheap as possible!

When it restarts it's much as if nothing happens. The screen goes blank, and everything keeps running. The diagnostic LEDs don't light, and there are no beeps. It happens if it's turned off, restarted through windows, or after saving and exiting in the BIOS.

I don't see any leaking Caps, and they don't look bulged from the outer casing. A couple of them appear raised off the board a millimeter or two, does that signify a bulging cap?

Seems it could be a cap problem since it seems they need time to discharge? Is that what you are thinking?

Thanks again!

how are you restarting it?
1) Are you issuing a RESTART command.. ?
2 Did u try issueing a SHUTDOWN .. and then try booting it up again via the POWER SWITCH ?
3) Did you try hitting the RESET switch while it's running ?

Are you running the latest bios for this board.? and did you try resetting the bios ?

The restarts either with a shutdown then through the power switch, after saving to the BIOS, I've tried the reset switch as well and it does the same thing.

I've pulled the CMOS battery to clear the BIOS a couple times as well. I'm not sure if it has the latest BIOS, and I've never flashed BIOS before.

It's this board:

Thanks!

could be a faulty power supply... can you try swapping one in from another build to test that out ?

Otherwise.. I would suspect the motherboard itself to be at fault

I picked up a replacement CMOS battery today and it also didn't work. I'm also believing it to be the motherboard.

Are crooked and slightly raised capacitors indicators of them bulging? Seems like it could very well be the CAPs.

usually the caps will be rounded at the top.. when they bulge.. or they show some signs of leakage underneath... It's not unusual to have spacing between the bottom of the cap and the board... that's normal...

I would really try to swap in another psu from another pc if you can.. to rule that out first.. It's far less painful than replacing a board...and can be done relatively quickly.

I stated in the OP that I've tried another brand new 600W PSU, and another brand new 450W PSU I had lying around, both led to the exact same behavior.

I get no diagnostic beeps otherwise, and all other components seem to be working well. I'm blaming the motherboard at this point, and may try to find another to try.

sorry ... missed that..

Yeah.. if the psu's were ok.. then the board would seem to be the most likely culprit
