no POST on new rig

Im putting together a new box and I cannot get it to post/boot. Only thing I have in it is CPU +HSF, video, RAM, floppy. When I power on, I don't get any video signal. I saw a forum posting once that mentioned something about mobo grounding. What's the deal with that?

BTW, is it required to use those little spacers between the mobo screws and the case chassis? Since I didn't have or use those little do-hickey's, could that be my problem?

Hmmmmmmmm..... Let's see here..... Since your case is probably conductive, unless you have a plastic one, then yes, the standoffs are required. You probably just fried your mobo by shorting out everything that touched a solder joint to the chassis. That sucks.

One thing that you are forgetting is that the solder points where you screw the mobo to the chassis are not connected to anything else. In other words there is no eletrical circuit of with anything else on the mobo...those points are surrounded by green PCB. Besides I haven't smelled any fried mobo yet 🙂 I don't think this could be the case because there just too many places where metal on the mobo would come in contact with the case.

Can someone give the low-down on mobo grounding?

If your mobo is grounded to the case then the rig would not do anything when u power on. it happened to me once, be sure that you use spancers when you screw in the mobo. If that is not your problem then you are out of luck.

Take your motherboard out of the case, and set it up on the counter or on a table on a box or something non-conductive to raise it up a bit. Install your memory, video card, and CPU + HSF only. Connect the PSU and plug it in. Turn the computer on by either hooking up the switch from the case to the motherboard, or much easier, just use a jumper to short the two pins for the power switch connection. The system should come on and post. If it still doesn't work out of the case, then it may be a dead motherboard. If it works, you definately need to get those motherboard standoffs. Your case didn't come with any? That is very unusual. You can buy a bag of miscellaneous motherboard install hardware at several places for very cheap...like $1 or $2...🙂
