The other night, an unknown component in my computer made a 'pfffffttttt pssssst' noise, hehe, then turned off, and i could smell something burnt inside. also note, this was during the POST phase

now the computer doesnt give an initial POST beep, or POST at all, and no video

i have ruled out the power supply as a problem and the hard drives are fine.

i can not swap the parts out as i have no backup system.

if i remove the cpu, the motherboard recognises there is no cpu inserted (and alerts me)

if i remove the video card, the motherboard continues to act in the prevous way... (eg nothing)

i am assuming the motherboard is to blame. i will replace it with an asus a8n32 this week... any other ideas?

it could still be your PSU.. best to test with another one beforce purchasing a motherboard.

It may have been a capacitor that blew from the sound. A careful visual inspection may find it if so.

the sound and smell would suggest a capacitor that blew. i'd do a careful visual check on the board to see if any of the parts look a little "off". i'd think it was your board too.
