A Navigator costs $45k+. A Prius about $20K+. That's like saying "well I'd rather have a $150,000 Ford GT instead of a Prius"

I dont think it looks that ugly.

I'd get one for a daily commuter if I traveled on the road a lot.

Big problem I see with it, I can still get killer milage out of a 2004 Civic for only $13,000.

Yeah the 04' HX with a CVT will get awesome mileage.

Yes, it's bigger than a Civic. It's a mid-size car now.

HX CVT
14,710
36 MPG City/44 MPG Highway = 40 MPG average

2004 Prius
19,995 (5285 more than HX)
60 MPG City/51 MPG Highway = 55.5 MPG average

Average driver does about 10k miles per year.
Prius needs 180.18 gallons of gas @ 1.95/gallon = 351.35
HX needs 250 gallons of gas @ 1.95/gallon = 487.50
Diff = 136.15

So actually it looks more like just over 38 years before you break even :) I don't think the cars are similarly equipped though, so that's not exactly a fair comparison.

The geek factor alone should push you to the Prius. There probably aren't any cars under $26k that have a Bluetooth option. I think voice controlled NAV/climate/radio is somethying usually seen only in higher end cars too. Unfortunately, some of the coolest features are not available in the US. The button to enable electric-only mode in certain conditions isn't available because of some stupid EPA regulation apparently. Then there's the self-parking feature you may have seen demo'd on the news.

I have a 2002 Prius now, and I have a 2004 on order. I can't wait to get it. And if you want one, get in line. You'll be lucky to be able to get one at any dealership before January unless you already pre-ordered. And Toyota has been advertising the sh!t out of this car for the last 6 months. I don't understand why, since obviously the demand is already there and it's the supply that's lacking. Bad for them, great for my 2002 resale value ;)
