So I have an iP4 (company provided) and a nice new SGNexus and as I'm dropping off the rental car this morning at the Albany airport I realize that I'd left both my phones behind! I know where they are and they'll be there when I return next week but I'm without a phone until then -- I feel so naked!!!

That's an awful feeling. I've only lost my smartphone twice... and both times it was one of those stomach sinking feelings. I got them both back - I figured it out within 10 minutes both times - but still it wasn't fun.

Pickup a Virgin Mobile prepaid phone at your nearest Radio Shack or Best Buy. 30-day return policy and no activation fee. Have your calls forwarded to the new phone number, and then return it at the end of your trip.

It should only cost you the price for a month's worth of airtime, $35/$45/$55 depending on whether you want 300/1200/unlimited minutes.

I can imagine what it must be like. Today I almost lost mine, left it on the counter at the bank. Luckily a teller saw it and half an hour later I got it back. I think I average about 4 situations per year of almost losing/destroying the phone. It's been 3 years since I fatally dropped my G1, I cant tell what would be worse, losing a phone or dropping it fatally.

I spent my 30th birthday alone on the top of a mountain with 3 cans of baked beans and no fire source.
And I'm a fucking pussy.

You guys make me sad.

I was in war in my home country for 2 years, constantly bombarded, no electricity, scarce food and lost many friends and relatives. That doesn't mean we shouldn't feel bad when we lose our luxuries, even temporarily.

Wouldnt have been Yugoslovia would it?
Cuz you can blame me in part for that. I helped drop a fuckload of tomahawks all over the place.

Now that's funny right there...

I've had two cell phones stolen from me:

I went to the crapper at a Las Vegas library, put my MotoRazr and an iPod on top of the toilet paper dispenser, and only 20 minutes later did I remember -- of course they were gone, Vegas don't you know.

The second one was just last summer -- I had my 15 month old HTC Evo 4G stolen from a table by a tool I was working on in a FAB in upstate NY where I'm still working.

Now, back to my not having my cell phones ... there has to be some kind of 5-step program for coping with the loss -- right?

Former Yugoslavia to be more exact and we welcomed the tomahawks though they came 4 years too late. Better late than never when US stepped since EU didn't have the balls to stop the slaughtering. And if you were the one to help hit the mobile missile launchers and heavy artillery positions in Lukavica, I'll buy you a drink. Sorry for OT.

Even though I recovered my phone within an hour it's unpleasant to having personal info exposed to strangers.

And to OP, if you are single I am willing to bet that once you lost the phones, few ladies will try to get in touch between now and recovery, it's just the way it goes.

Yup, USS Phillipean Sea. We were the first to launch and we also set records for most launches per day, consecutive launches, etc.
Am half Yugoslovian, so I still refer to it as Yugoslovia. It often makes people stare at me funny.

As for phone: Get an app that lets you remote wipe it. You wont have your hardware back, but the thief wont have your personal data either.

- PLEASE NOTE!! -
You must install this app now, while you still have the phone. If you putz around it will be too late.

I think apple has one that automatically takes a picture with the front camera every time somebody unlocks or attempts to unlock it, and sends that pic to an email or something. Pretty awesome.

That is cool. I had a thing on my laptop for a while that did the same thing. It would tap in the sudden motion sensor, so if someone picked it up, it would take pictures and an alarm would sound.

I have the find my phone thing on for my Windows Phone. Lets me see where it is, remote lock/wipe/ring the device and put a message on it calling the person a dirty thief and alerting them to the incoming robot ninja pirates.

Everyone should get something like that for their device, if only for the ring it feature.

I've been thinking about how much sensitive information is stored and easily accessed on our phones and tablets. And unlike our computers, you don't have to enter the password to access the mail, contacts, etc. Idea of misplacing or losing my devices is unnerving. So much private and sensitive information is available for anyone to see and access.

Nice features, especially taking pictures of the thief. I would have been out of luck yesterday if someone had taken it, my phone is winmo 6.5 native. No Android app could help me since all the thief would have to do is pull the battery/reboot the phone and it would boot into winmo.

That seem quite unethical to me. It's like a woman returning her wedding dress the day after she wore it at her wedding.

Heck, I ran out to do a couple errands this morning & realized I'd forgotten my phone, lol, I can't imagine how horrible it would be to go on a trip without it!

Alternatively, you can always keep it or eBay it. Either option beats running around the streets of Albany naked... ;)

Actually I'm running around the streets of Salt Lake City naked -- when I get back to Albany I'll have my phones back...
