No PC HDMI Audio on Pioneer VSX-819

I'm having a bizarre audio problem with my Pioneer VSX-819 receiver. I'm trying to hook my computer up to it via the HDMI connector on my HD 5770. I can get picture, but no sound. Now, if I hook the computer directly up to the TV via HDMI, I do get sound through the TV. If I connect another HDMI device to the receiver to the exact same input port, I get sound as well.

So there's nothing wrong the receiver, nothing wrong with the cables, and nothing wrong with the computer. Any ideas why it's doing this?

What format is your PC pushing out audio in? I'd play with that a bit, maybe reduce it to stereo PCM and/or DD-5.1, see what happens. Could be your PC is trying to be more clever than you think and trying to adjust audio settings for the receiver incorrectly.

It's a handshake issue. I have a VSX-919 and occasionally run into this problem. Usually if I log out of windows and then log back in the sound will work. Also sometimes switching the input on my TV and then switching back to the PC HDMI will work as well. Also sometimes switching through the inputs on the receiver (like going from DVD back to HDMI) will enable it.

The input switching is a hit or miss, but it always seems to work to log out of windows and then log back in.

Make sure yoru selecting the HMDI as the audio input ont he correct HDMI input on the receiver. I know on my ONkyo 606 I can pick a different audio source for each HDMI input. The stupid Sky HD box doesn't output sound by HDMI only video! I run an optical for the sound...

I have ATI radeon HD 4550.
How does its solve the problem for you?
I still didn't figure it, because the sound work o.k when I connect directly from the PC to the TV with HDMI, and all the other connection (e.g SAT) work also fine.
Its quite a mystery..

I installed the Realtek driver, and then the PC would detect when an HDMI audio connection was available. Sometimes it was flaky, but it would mostly work.

Recently I re-installed the OS (Win7 x64), and installed the latest driver. Audio worked straight away. Have you tried that?

I have vista so I dont think ill change to win7.
which driver did you download? the one from realtek website?
cause I avnt found anything else in the link you gave me, and I already tried the driver from realtek, and it didnt help...

The solution has been found finally - in another forum on the net.
Apparently the solution is the screen resolution of windows in the PC.
If you changed the screen resolution to 1280 x 720 , the sound suddenly works. This resolution is not the best for my LCD, but at least I have sound right now. I have no idea what is the relations between the solution and the audio, but apparently their is.
Finally....

Apparently the receiver only supports HD resolutions. Strictly 1280x720 or 1920x1080. Unfortunately, most 720p HDTVs have a native res of 1336x768. It never dawned on me that was the issues. It does make some sense though. Why the resolution affects audio is unknown to me. Logically you'd think there's be no picture or sound if it was set to an unsupported res.
