No PATA on Broadwater

I just heard this from a few PMs here in Taiwan, but I didn't feel like writing a whole article on it. ICH8, Intel's next generation south bridge, has no PATA support. Since Broadwater is only approved to run in tandum with with ICH8, ICH7 isn't an option either. Your next Conroe or Yonah motherboard might completely lack a DVDR unless the OSD guys can get their act together!

Chipset-integrated SATA channels typically can be configured to "legacy IDE" programming model - that plus a SATA-IDE converter board, and you're sorted for ATAPI.

In fact, that is exactly what Plextor are doing right now.

That's why God made el-cheapo discrete IT8211 and IT8212 controller chips with ATAPI-supporting option ROMs.
