No one happy I didn't get a GTP? Would you get a 2002 Pontiac SuperCharged GTP loaded with everything over a Maxima?

Personally, if I had to go between the two, I'd get a Nissan Maxima. Yes, it may not look the best (heck, I think they are semi-fugly), but, sheesh 3.5L manual, 4 doors, and for $18,600 with trade-in...not bad...

I must say the Pontiac Super Charged GTP is not bad...but that would be more like my weekend fix up car

<< "Buying American" is UN-American. The american economy rewards those who offer the best product at the best price (this is part of capitalism). "Buying American" just for the sake of it rewards those who do not deserve it.

That said I will personally kick your ass if you buy that PONTIAC over a NISSAN MAXIMA. I mean WTF, you're not even serious are you? Not only will the Maxima spank the GTP without even warming up the engine but as yield said it has "Nissan quality, better looks, better re-sale, better reliability".

Correct me if I'm wrong but the GTP is not available in a standard is it? Even if it is it STILL SUCKS, but if it is only available in an auto well then god damn you for even asking!

--

I'm not really mad...but I will kick your ass if you pay $2k more for a crappier car.

Sadly it's confirmed. The GTP weighs 150lbs more than the Maxima, has 15 horsepower less and also forces you to use an automatic transmission.

Without actually putting them side by side I'd estimate that the Maxima could hit 100 miles an hour and the GTP would be trying to break 30.

Plus you've just wasted a nice new HDtv on that darn GTP. What would you rather do:

1) Drive around in your GTP
2) Drive to best buy with your FASTER, NICER, BETTER Maxima and pick up a new HDTV for free!

OK done ;)

Well I'm kind of biased... owning a 2001 Max myself, I'd have to say without a doubt, get the Maxima.

Skoorb: I would not trounce the GTP that bad. It's a nice car and I love the front end of it...really menacing. But the speed is a non issue. I mean the older gen Maximas 5-spd would run 14.7s stock with a good driver so that's a non issue. However the Maxima will trounce the GTP in the high-end, ala racing on the highway...the 3.8L just can't breath above 4.5K RPMS!

The Maxima does have better handling though, the Widetrak crap that Pontiac spews is just a gimmick! Hell even the Pontiac dude of 'American Muscle Car' said so!

I find the interior of the Maxima better plus it has better resale value. I do commend the GM 3.8L V6 though, it is bulletproof! So is its auto trannies, GM makes the best auto trannies, BMW uses GM trannies in the 5-series...they are the 5-spd auto trannies that GM doesnt even use in its own cars! It's too good for 'em...hehe

I'll agree the GTP is a nice car. That weird collectors' edition or whatever for $26k looks kinda snazzy. it's not a bad car, it's just not as cool as a maxima IMO. Because not only is it more expensive but it is slower (even if not a hell of a lot it still is), and yet it's pontiac which means you get worse resale and almost certainly less reliability as well.

2) More Torque GTP 280 vs. Max 246

Hey man a VW TDI has 150 foot pounds torque, but you won't see that doing any racing :)

I've seen some TDI's try and race... its rather funny

I agree that the Maxima is a better all around car, however, I don't like people to trash the GTP just because its a domestic.

And if you look at carpoint, the highest priced GTP is only $200 more than the Max SE :)

I can't help but think the same thing.. when someone thinks something like me and Skoorb do, it's kinda hard to not lay down what we think in a very aggressive fashion.. in my head.. I can't even imagine taking a GTP over a Max SE.. to me you'd have to be truly retarded.. But that's just me.. it's hard thinking like someone else.. if I look at the facts, I see the Maxima is nicer in like all ways.. yet some people would buy a GTP over the Max.. I have NO idea why.. but they do.. so it's hard to force your opinions on people.. but to me it's a no brainer that the Max is the car to get!!

Invest wisely in the maxima. It is the better of the two. Unfortunately, foriegn cars (toyota, honda, and maxima) are still better quality than American cars. I own a honda civic and it has the ride of a medium size car, sweet handling, and nice smooth acceleration.

There is really no point asking any kind of car questions in this forum. This is so foreign biased you can't get a neutral answer.

Has anyone asked him what/why he looks for in a car? What are the important factors for him? Most of you mentioned auto vs manual, does he care? Can he even drive a manual?

On top of that, you asked a question regarding the most liked vehicles here - Altima and Maxima. [thought to myself, maybe ATOT will like it more if Pontiac named Grand Am - Grandma instead? You seem to like the "ma" cars?]

Show me a car thread where Altima or Maxima isn't offered as the solution to everything! :disgust: Not that they are not nice cars, but they are the answer to all the car questions here. They are the "perfect" cars. If they are so perfect, how come they don't sell a lot more of them? I don't see them in any of the top selling lists. Apparently SOME people don't like them.

Pothead, just drive both of them and buy what YOU like. Or at least go to a real car forum to get opinions from people who actually drive these cars.

Because people aren't smart?

I have asked this MANY Times.. I have NO idea why you don't see more of these cars.. you know why people on this forum all swear by these cars? because we know the facts and we are smart people (for the most part i guess) and the fact is.. Nissan rocks.. compare a Maxima to a better selling Camry or Accord..
the Maxima is a nicer car in every way yet it sells less.. I struggle to figure out the reason for this ...

I agree drive both and get what you like.. but I still think the better car is the Nissan.. I don't mind GTP's but it's not as nice.. I'm a Nissan finatic. My dad has a 2K Max.

Maxima. I hate GM's crappy interiors. The Maxima interior is a relative work of art, even though I think the changes for 2002 have cluttered up some aspects of the dashboard's elegant, simple design.

I won't even get started with the product quality, marketing, and logistical issues lingering in the penny-wise, pound-foolish corporate quagmire that is General Motors. For the last 20 years, the only things they've been able build correctly IMO are full sized trucks, and I hear, Corvettes and the occasional Cadillac. They even fuxored Saturn by never redesigning the S series (under the skin, it's a 12 year old car), and by "borrowing" a foreign design for the new L series. A large factor in Saturn's initial popularity was that it was completely designed and built in the USA. Now they've been dumbstruck by the unpopularity of the L series. Just what did they expect?

That's true :) I think that he doesn't really expect non-bias. He can watch us debate and argue over the merits of either vehicle and hopefully draw some benefit from it. You're right that altima and maxima are offered as the be all and end all. And you know why? Cause they ARE the perfect cars! THey aren't top selling list because some people don't visit AT and haven't learned it yet :D

An update from the OP:

Originally, I was aiming for a Maxima, no other cars. I was looking at the Maximas, 01 and 02s, for the past 3 months. Then 2 days ago the sales rep showed me the Altima, and the rear end of it just caught my eye, so much sportier than the Maxima and nearly the same engine but no ABS and 25 hp less. I only could get them to give me a loaded Altima SE with moonroof for just under 20k. Then my friend tells me of the GTP. I got hooked on the GTP because it came with so much features, leather, bose stereo, computer trip, nice dash board, and awesome high polished rims, etc...

I'm still thinking, and I know the Maxima has a lot of hps.

BTW, I do lots of driving even though I am a student, about 25k miles a year.

I can drive auto and stick.

I'm paying a portion of it and my parents will loan some money to help out. They wanted a car that was decent size and a v-6. I wanted something sporty. Looked at the WRX, not great physically, 2 door Accords have no power. Nothing else left.

There's the icebreaker.. if you do lots of driving I'd say an import is the way to go

I wouldn't tack on tons of miles on a GM and expect it to perform as well in the long run as a Nissan.

Not even close. The Maxima's consistently rated among the best sedans out there. The Pontiac looks nice, but hope you got money for a new car after 40k.... I'm trying to get my girlfriend to get an Altima. Nissan makes sweet cars...

Without looking at numbers I'd guess the Altima V6, though still fast as a skanky whore, would get a bit better mileage if only because of it's lighter weight and slightly less horses than Maxima.

Nissan makes sweet cars...

I'm still trying to decide tomorrow between a new sentra and a golf. Drove golf tonight...sentra tomorrow. Such a damn hard decision!

Think about the resale value of your 4 year old car with 100,000 miles when you want to trade it. The Maxima will be worth several thousand more. Assuming a 5 year loan, you might still be upside down on the Pontiac. I doubt you'll be in bad shape with a Maxima, you'll probably be in a position of equity.
