Bad move, IMO. It will be time for new hardware within the next 18 months.

I guess that leaves them room to have a separate event (and I guess the press conferences aren't technically part of E3 either - they just happen to be in the same city a couple days before). I guess if they are planning a 2013 launch, we may see an event later this year or something.

How is this a big deal, let alone news at all? MS has nothing to gain by announcing anything about the next console at e3.

Most people go for "graphics". Have there really been many graphics increases over the past however many years the 360 has been out? Not really as far as I can see. It plays all the top games and I sure as hell can't notice much of a difference between a 360 and a PC playing the same game (except for the 360's awesome ability to drop frame rate down to like 15fps all the time).

No need for a new Xbox console in my opinion, just send new updates and update the media. It's not like between the Original Xbox and Xbox 360 it basically moved from the old timey TV's to new 1080p tv's with HDMI input. Nothing new has happened except 3D and 3D blows.

There will be no new Xbox. We are in the post console era. Microsoft knows that tablets are the game systems of the future.
Not yet. There's still no tablet game that can even hold a candle to the premier console games. I have an iPad 2 and mots of the games are $.99 and good for a few hours. And my tablet doesn't have a 46" screen.

That's because you are playing consoles and/or PC games that have been limited in what they demand so that they can be easily run on a PS3 or 360. I don't have a decent PC now but certainly they are much more power than a 360 and an up to date console would allow graphics to be far better.

I'd say graphics sure seem to be getting better at a slower rate than a decade ago, though, and that's due to the ubiquity of consoles and most game developers tailoring to that hardware.

I agree 3D blows, it is crap.

I was just taking a jab at MS over their current philosophy with PC's & Windows 8.

Pirates
Galaxy on fire 2
Chaos rings

I've only played the first. Not as graphically intense but offer hours of gameplay

There are others as well

Pirates is a port of the console version (which is a pretty meh port of the PC version) of an 8 year-old game, assuming you mean "Sid Meier's Pirates!" and not some other game.

There are plenty of good handheld games, but that's not the best example of how they're taking over :p

I Used to have a coleco vision, commodore 64 and played Atari as well. The games back then were crap compared to what is out now, but people loved stuff like PAC man.

Too many games now are all about shootIng and violence. The market for this is tapped out. The next gaming wave is casual gaming

People like my wife will spend hours playing words with friends and similar games. But she said she will never touch mass effect or anything like that

And mobility always beats specs. In 5 years iPads will have the storage to handle games like mass effect. And with tablet gpu power doubling every year they will surpass consoles. The iPad 3 is already about as powerful as the Xbox 360

I never did play pIrates, maybe it's worth a shot on the ipad. (edit: actually just checked all the reviews say it is crashy)

Not always. I was at bestbuy playing with the vita and thought this is nifty. Now if only I would ever use one...I just wouldn't. I play video games at home on a big TV. And when I'm out somewhere it's not on my radar to play them.

Tablets will not surpass consoles any time soon. And even if an old console is surpassed by a tablet there will be so many old tablets that nobody will be developing for the brand new one. There aren't any meaningful games that require an ipad3 and won't be any time soon because most people have ipads 1 and 2.

Also, tablets offer a unique, but not better experience to a controller. They are not bad for RTS games, but they suck for button mash games and the faux onscreen joysticks suck as well.

One of the selling points of a console is the longevity of it. Android tablets are refreshed like every 5 months, iPad yearly. Considering a console costs less than a decent tablet... They wont be replacing them any time soon.

Uh, no. No it doesn't. Not by a loooongshot.Quit speaking for everyone.

Maybe true if you're constantly catching connecting flights or using public transportation, but I, and I know many others, aren't prepared to take massive performance and capability/interface hits so we can have a vastly inferior experience on the shitter.

PC's beat main frames even though they were slower
laptops started outselling desktops long before the spec/dollar caught up to desktops

First of all, the 360 GPU is a 7 year-old design. The iPad 3 GPU is better in raw fillrate, but I really doubt that it beats it in overall performance.

There will be an upper limit to the electrical and thermal power that tablet SoCs are going to use. You'll see chips later this year that increase GPU performance within those constraints, but I don't think you'll see the unrestrained evolution like you will on standalone cards or consoles.

people just dont want great longplaying games anymore. They want the quick 99cent variety they can play on the go. Gaming is becoming so dumbed down its pathetic. I will keep playing what I already own on my PC, PS3 and 360. Maybe when the gaming crash hits we can get back to better gaming. I can play a serious game swishing my finger on a screen.
