At least he is honest about the real position.

"Yes we are doing it. No I don't give a shit"

Sure raise rates by 300% and everyone can deal with it.... How many people would have to file bankruptcy?

We need to stop this green crap and look for clean coal answers.

Why?

Solar and wind are about market competitive with gas and coal now.

In the North Midwest..... no way in heck!
They are subsidized by government and still lose money! That's what I do for a living so I know how bad it is.

I'm paying 6-7 cents /kwh for 100% wind. So it can be done.

Besides natural gas is cheaper than coal right now and actually the main reason no one is going to be building new coal plants. The drastic drop in wind and solar seal the deal.

just because you are subsidized by the government doesnt mean that solar is wrong in the long term.

Thats why governments subsidize industry. To get them to the point where the tech doesnt need government intervention anymore. Unless you think using the clean power of the sun isnt a worthy long term goal for the human race.

Wind and Solar are subsidized by government…. You and me, what don’t you get? Gas is cheaper but that is what the EPA will hit next. And there is nothing wrong with clean coal plants….. If the government would have invested in clean coal plants as heavily as green energy we would have had a viable source of energy for generations.

The costs have come down to the point where subsidies could be pulled over the next few years and not affect the price.

(Not the best chart being from 2013 and Europe but I'm on my phone and it gets the point across that even two years ago prices were reaching parity.)

Clean coal by definition will have to use some of the power generated to sequester the exhaust gasses. Once you can no longer externalize that cost the cost per kWh is going to make coal even less competitive with other energy sources.

Natural gas is currently a net positive when it's used to displace coal from an environmental standpoint and new gas plants make business sense. Over the long term they will have to be phased out too.

The government should be investing in renewables. That's the future and positions US companies to be competitive.

So what do you do with energy? (Just curious)

Not even close… from what I have read Germany dropped 5 Nuclear plants for solar and wind and subsidized the farmers to the T…. Just talking with the nationals I work with.

If you would turn off all nuclear and went green no way would they make it with their needs.

Power conversion and I will leave it at that.

Why would I want to turn off all nuclear? From a global warming perspective it's as green as it needs to be.

I could power the entire world 3 times over using no more uranium than we mine each year if we switched to all breeder reactors.

There's no reason we can't move off of coal in the short term and gas in the medium term by replacing them with nuclear, solar, and wind over the next century. Better storage for intermittent power sources is needed but it's coming.

I'll also state that without being able to externalize the cost of the waste, (which nuclear doesn't get to do and solar and wind don't have to) coal isn't competitive.

It's possible to do mission critical work on nothing more than solar and batteries. It's a pain in the ass, not ready for general power generation but doable.

Care to explain why? Prices have dropped exponentially over the last 3 decades. Or are you saying the government is paying for the entire drop in price and it hasn't actually moved since the 70's?

And what big business has not been subsidized by the Government?

A lot more money spent on fossil fuels than renewables. A better return up until this point on fossil fuels per unit of energy generated because they are a mature technology.

I'd expect renewables to end up cheaper in the long run as they are basically competitive now.
