Everything used to work fine (my ripped CD's, anything I put in the drive) but now nothing plays. If I pull up my files on Winamp they simply won't play, and WMP gives an error everytime.

I've restarted and haven't installed anything since...what is going on? I am on Vista BTW

Check your device manager (assuming vista has one like XP). Are there any error icons which might mean your sound drivers aren't working properly?

Also, go start->run and type dxdiag. Are any issues reported there on the sound tab?

Sound works but WMP and Winamp won't play anything, even CD's I put in the drive.

In WMP try tools, options, devices, speaker, click properties, make sure the "Audio device to use" is the correct one?

Something similar in wimamp?

And as for "won't play anything" ... what have you tried? you tried CD's. What about mp3's, or wav files?

I used to get this problem alot back when I was using winamp. After using winamp for 6 months my audio would suddenly cut out and stop working and I would get a bad sound device error no natter what program I chose. The only way I could fix is was to Uninstall my drivers, run driver cleaner to pick up any remnants. Then Re-install the drivers and it would be work just fine. Of course after it doing this twice to me I got rid of winamp and picked up a new music player (Al Song) and it has been over a year and it hasn't happened again. I think there is something in winamp the fucks up and causes problems with your sound card/onboard sound.

So I would try what I used to do and see if it fixes it.

-Uninstall drivers.
- Restart computer into safe mode and use driver cleaner to clean up their remnants
- Restart computer normally
- Install new drivers
