No mouse works?

I'm working on a really messed up pc (HP7940), and for some reason no mouse will work. I tried a USB Microsoft mouse and a PS/2 mouse but I get nothing. It should also be noted that if the USB mouse is plugged in then the system will just freeze at the hp screen. Both mice are optical, and the lights do come on, but just doesn't work. I tried forcing ps/2 mice in the bios and enabling legacy usb in the bios but still nothing. I also updated the bios to the latest version, but I'm really out of ideas. Any suggestions?

You could boot the computer with Knoppix (or any other Live CD) and see if the mouse works. If it works then the problem is OS/driver related, otherwise it is mobo related.

ok I tried Knoppix and the mouse indeed works (pretty cool linux thing too)...so obviously it's a problem with windows...but what problem? I haven't got a clue on where to look to fix it since I never heard of or had this problem...what I do notice however is when I went into control panel via keyboard it seemed like the mouse was there...the mouse I guess was in the middle of the screen and therefore was hovering over an icon...and you know when you hover over an icon it says what it does or something like that...well it was doing that to one icon...I tried moving the mosue or clicking but that didn't do anything...I'm kinda guessing a virus or something is messing with it so I'm gonna run a virus scanner...
