I was in queue to Step Up to a 512 GTX... however EVGA's supply has seemingly run dry and is prohibiting any more step ups to the card... However, they are going to be making an announcement soon, and hopefully it's "If you were in queue for a 512, we will extend your step up period until G71 comes out". I can wish, can't I?

That would be a sweet alternative. If I was in the queue, I'd be hoping they don't get anymore 512ers.

Well, I was lucky to pick-up an eVGA 7800GTX 512 from Tigerdirect the other day and should be receiving it Tueday. However, even thought it's being bundled w/ COD2 for free, I still forked over $750. Reading eVGA's step-up terms, even though I didn't purchase it from eVGA directly, I'm still eligible to take part of the program. With the price gouging price that I paid, when the G71 comes out and if by chance the msrp is $699, will eVGA allow me to step up for free since my invoice will indicate that I paid more than that or will they make me pay the difference between the msrp of the 512 and the G71?

I guess I'm just trying to find a bright side to overpaying for the 7800GTX 512, that'll carrying over when I step-up. Thanks for reading.

I dunno if they will refund you, worst case scenario you get the card for free.

Edit: nitromullet is right... maybe you get eVGA bucks for a compromise?

They give you whatever you paid towards the new card.

Thx for quick reply folks. And.no I don't expect a refund. I'm just thinking that they lose more money to me b/c I paid over msrp to TD but will get the price I paid for as credit than someone who got great deal on 7800GT CO for $319, well below msrp.

yea stepping up for me will still be painful to the wallet: I paid $299 for my 7800GT CO SE (n516) from newegg, while eVGA still sells that part for around $450. eck not so much a good deal for me now is it, although its better than nothing
thats what they expect too, not to many people buy the part direct from evga I'd imagine.
and yea, I wanna hear that announcement too... my step-up ends at the end of february (actually march 1st, bought on november 29th)
but what im curious about: if the card you are stepping up to is out of stock, what happens when you get placed in queue and run past the 90 day period? Do you still qualify, because they had been out of stock at the time?
If so, that would be sweet.. and you get to keep your card until they get your replacement card in stock?

It sounds like Nvidia is still having supply issues with the 512MB, combined with the fact that Samsung reportedly claims that they are having no issues with GDDR3 supplies whatsoever, it could very well be that Nvidia is having a tough time with yields on cores that run at 550 Mhz.

INQ suggests its only the ram thats causing the short supply. However, i dont yields are problems becasue this GPu has been in production for quite some time.

i'm pretty confident that they'll do that. evga is a good company and what skin is it off their nose to extend it? they'd lose more in ill will than they would monetarily if they burnt you all.

edit- and nitro is right for the step up, they give you whatever you paid for your card. when i stepped up my 6600gt agp they gave me back the full newegg invoice price even though they had already sent me the rebate check :)

Yea I figured about the same - EVGA wouldn't want to have their reputation hurt, and by extending my Steo Up period I'd for sure praise them to my friends/on forums. Right now I'm hoping that they don't get more 512's in so I can Step Up to G71 :)

This is probably why there's no step up to the 512GTX- everyone and their brother wants it and supply is short.

EVGA probably had 1000s and 1000s of step up requests, no where near enough cards to fill them, so they had to make a business decision and take them out of the "Step Up" loop.

so rollo, what do you think evga will do for those who are already on the step-up queue for the gtx512? Honor the requests, no matter how long it takes? Or give them the chance to replace them in the G71 ends up coming out before enough stock of the GTX512 comes out?

Supply does appear to be short, but I highly doubt "everyone" wants to pay $700+ for a single video card. I certainly wouldn't, even if it was named Rampage and had 3dfx written on the box. :p

I think I will be luckier if they extend the step up to G71 for those in queue... I don't need anything more than a 256 GTX right now...

eVGA's Announcement is up, not exactly what folks were expecting:

EVGA e-GeForce 7800GTX 512MB PCI-E and Step-Up Program.

Due to an overwhelming response to the new e-GeForce 7800GTX 512MB video card, customers are experiencing a very long wait time in the EVGA Step-Up process. We know that our customers deserve nothing but the best from EVGA and should never be scraficed to second best at all, but, we have to say we are very sorry to those members who are still on the waiting list for a 512MB card. The availability is extrmely low and supply is way less than the demand.
We also understand, that our customers demand high performance products, so we have come up with a plan to tackle this issue head-on and meet the needs of our customers.
We hope that customers can benefit from this program and Step-Up to the next power level of game playing experience in time for the holiday season.

Customers with select video cards in the Step-Up queue for a 512MB card will have the option to purchase a second video card of the same type giving them SLI capability at a massive discount. Alternatively we are offering a couple of other options for you to choose from that might benefit you or better suit your needs in time for the holidays. Please see the options below.

Step-Up Option 1
For those already in the Step-Up queue that have 2 cards in an SLI configuration and choose to leave the queue.
e-GeForce 7800GTX KO Edition_____$200 Cash Back
e-GeForce 7 Series Card__________$150 Cash Back
e-GeForce 6 Series Card__________$ 50 Cash Back

Step-Up Option 2
Keep your existing video card and Step-Up to a 2nd EVGA card of the same type for an SLI configuration
e-Geforce 7800GTX KO Edition___ $ 200 Discount Off EVGA MSRP___ Plus $100 EVGA Bucks
e-GeForce 7 Series Card________ $ 150 Discount Off EVGA MSRP___ Plus $ 50 EVGA Bucks
e-GeForce 6 Series Card________ $ 50 Discount Off EVGA MSRP___ Plus $ 20 EVGA Bucks
(6600LE and above only)

Step-Up Option 3
Step-Up to one of the following EVGA graphics cards
e-GeForce 7800GTX KO Edition___ Normal Step-Up procedure____ Plus $100 EVGA Bucks
e-GeForce 7 Series Card________ Normal Step-Up procedure____ Plus $ 50 EVGA Bucks
e-GeForce 6 Series Card________ Normal Step-Up procedure____ Plus $ 20 EVGA Bucks

* These options are only available to those members that are already in the Step-Up Program queue up to and including December 10th, 2005.
* This will be a special one time Step-Up Program offer, and not valid with any other offer
* Choosing either Option 1, 2 or 3 will be considered official completion of your Step-Up Request

Ouch. With this new, and rumor that NV will phase out the 512MB GTX in Feb, its not looking good for consumers. I wonder if the same people mocking people for paying $600 for a X1800XT that allegedly will be replaced by a faster card in Januaury will do the same to people who paid $750 for a 512MB GTX. Somehow, I doubt it.

Well, apparently there are more people who are willing to pay 700+ dollars for this card than there are actual cards. Tiger Direct got 20 the other day, and all twenty were gone at least by the very next day. No, "everyone" does not want to pay $700+ for a vid card, but fortunately for these vendors, they don't need everyone to pay it because more than enough people are. And they know when they get in another shipment, they will sell off to.
